I posted this on the parent's board, but thought you all might be interested. It appeared in today's news (May 7th):

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- A New York University student was charged with bank fraud after depositing $43 million in bogus cashier's checks into Swiss and American accounts and trying to withdraw the money, prosecutors said Friday.

Hakan Yalincak, 21, also faces civil charges that he convinced two investors to sink $2.8 million into a nonexistent hedge fund and spent the money on luxury items and university donations.

He wept in court as U.S. Magistrate Judge Joan Margolis ordered him jailed until a detention hearing Thursday. "I have a graduation on Wednesday," Yalincak said.

This story is totally awesome. Swiss bank accounts and nonexistent hedge funds, this thing can be a made for TV movie; who ever would have guessed a 21 year old CAS senior was behind the whole thing probably organinzing it from the NYU campus. You can read more about it on CNN.

This kid was a math major, just like I'll be, I hope this isn't me in 4 years. This just shows how easy shady stuff can be if you have brains.

I love this quote:
"He wept in court as U.S. Magistrate Judge Joan Margolis ordered him jailed until a detention hearing Thursday. "I have a graduation on Wednesday," Yalincak said."

Looks like he won't be at graduation after all. As Nelson on the Simpons would say "HAHA".

That's the sentence that got to me, too. If any current NYU students see anything in your college paper about this, I'd be interested in knowing wha's said.

This kid's family has actually donated a considerable sum of money to NYU. Obviously the donation will have to be scrutizined to see if the money is clean.

All in all, a pretty funny story. At NYU, you never know what the guy sitting next to you in class is up to.

Interesting article about this in the Washington Square News. Apparently this guy was originally from GSP, so clearly he wasn't among the smartest at NYU, and maybe that's why he got caught. A "true" CAS or Stern student may have actually pulled it off.
