Hi, newbie here! I'll be a senior in High school this year (graduating 2014). This summer I've really been starting to seriously think about what it is that I want to do. I've considered becoming a Pharmacist, Nurse Anesthetist, Physician's Assistant, Radiation Therapist and even shifting gears and leaning towards engineering.

I was curious chiefly curious about Pharmacy school and the prereqs, as well as engineering and Nurse Anesthetist school. Is there anyone that was or is in any of the majors doing the prereqs or working towards their bachelors that could give me insight? How hard are the classes? Is it really competitive? Anything you have to say would REALLY be appreciated! Thanks!

I did the engineering pre-reqs at a community college, and a lot of people get weeded out in them. Calc 2 and Physics 1 were filled up at the start of the semester (35 seats). The next semester, we had 15 in Calc 3, 9 in Physics 2, and 4 in Differential Equations.

For me, the classes were not necessarily “hard” but they were VERY time consuming. For Calc 2, I would come home from class Wednesday afternoon and spend the next 4 days doing 12 hours of homework a day, finishing Sunday evening in time for the test Monday morning. All the math builds on math you should already know, step by step. If you’re sharp, and keep up on it, you can get through it okay. Calc 2 is the worst math class you’ll deal with as Freshman or Sophomore, in my opinion. It’s a lot worse than Diff Eq or Calc 3. Physics 1 wasn’t too bad, but we rushed through Physics 2 so fast that it was tough to keep up with.

Have you taken any Physics or (Pre-)Calculus classes at HS yet?

Yes, I took Pre-Calculus last year at the AP level. I got an A in it the first semester but towards the end of the year I got lazy because I deemed it “too easy” and ended up with a B.
