I just graduated from HS today and have been thinking about college a lot lately.

My HS GPA is somewhere between 3.7 and 3.8.
I took all honors classes, except science
My best SAT score was 1610

I am going to Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa next year for finances or marketing. I've had three dream schools that I didn't apply to this year because I knew I wouldn't get in.
1)Notre Dame
2)Penn
3)Northwestern

Does anyone have any input on my chances for getting in to these schools after my freshman or sophomore year in college if I can maintain a very good GPA? Will I be pushed aside for some Ivy League Standout who wants to transfer? Would it be smarter for me to graduate from Mercyhurst and then try apply to a good grad school instead?

I would recommend doing two years at Mercyhurst so your SAT scores no longer matter that much. A 1610 SAT score would do nothing but hurt you at those schools otherwise.

Congratulations on graduating today! If you wait and apply as a junior, like caligulashorse said, you’ll have a better chance at getting it. You also want to give your school time and make sure you definitely dislike it before trying to transfer.

High School is a joke. Most people aren’t cognitively developed as young teens. I knew I wasn’t since school did not matter to me at the time. I was in the same situation, with your GPA as a high school student with all honors/college courses. If you mess up any of your high school years, colleges think that you’re not “college material.” Going to a different college and transferring in will give you the opportunity to show ivies what you’re really made of.
