Thinking about transferring for sophomore year

I was rejected as a freshman applicant and am thinking about transferring after a year at FIU. I got a composite score of 26 but scored a 17 on the math section, which was a few points below the requirement. I figured my 34 on the reading section would give the admissions committee a hint, especially since I was applying as an english major with an emphasis in creative writing. Anyway, I know that as a sophomore applicant I am still held liable for meeting the freshman requirements and wanted to know if I should retake the ACT? I prefer that test over the SAT and would retake it if I had to. My composite score fell in between their range... its just that little 17.

I'm sure my GPA at FIU will be spectacular since my main goal is to transfer out, but it would suck to not get in to a school like FSU because of a sub score (not even a composite score).

If you really want to transfer, you should consider going to a community college such as TCC. I’m not sure why, but everyone knowledgeable about the area seems to say that FSU, UF, and the like prefer high-achieving CC students over ones from other universities.

I think it’s more because it’s seen as a more “lateral” move to switch from one university to another. There’s more need for a community college student to transfer to a university, because you can’t get a four year degree from a community college, while you can get one from FIU.

If going to FSU is really your goal, definitely consider TCC.

Whether you go to FIU (I transferred to FSU from there after I got 60 credits) or some other school, it won’t ever hurt you to take the ACT again.

If you get your math score up, perfect, if not, then don’t send the score out.
