Hello everyone!

I am currently enrolled at SFSU as a Cinema major. I'm going into my sophomore year this fall and I want to transfer into UCLA's BA Film Program.

Now, before anyone says anything, I am well aware that my chances are slim. I realize that UCLA's Film School only accepts about 15 transfers and I know would have a much better chance if I were coming from a CC, but this doesn't discourage me entirely!

So a little about my current academic standing: I didn't do so well my first semester, recieving two D+s in Intro to Astronomy and Statistics in Psychology (I was looking to be a Psychology major). My overall GPA was 2.5 until second semester when I became a Cinema major and realized what I wanted to do with my life. I recieved a 3.5, raising my overall GPA to a 3.0, which is the minimum GPA requirement.

The only thing that worries me is meeting the GE requirements and raising my GPA even higher. Raising my GPA is my responsibilty, but I am confused about the types of classes that would satisfy UCLA's GE requirements and how many I should take seeing as my school runs on a semester system. Also the language requirement has to be equivelant to UCLA's level 3 course. My school only offers "First Semester" and "Second Semester" language classes. Would these satisfy the requirement?

I can privately provide more information if needed. If anyone, preferably from the school, could be of any assistance, I would be greatly appreciative.

Best,

UCLA has a very holistic review for the film applicant - remember, if you are selected among forty to fifty I believe (you might have to check those numbers), you will be interviewed.

It’s all about that creative writing sample they require. A good GPA (3.5+), but film majors aren’t required to have 3.8 GPA’s to be admitted. Your letters of recommendation and the personal statement.

You don’t need experience in film to be admitted - far from it!
You need to PROVE to them why you have the creativity, ambition and passion to join their film program. It’s selective for a reason. They know the applicants who have passion.

Good luck! I’m also applying to UCLA as a History major this fall. I used to be interested in a career in film.

I doubt that a lot, if any, of your SFSU units transfer over to UCLA Film. That would basically kill your unit count as well as your UC GPA. A 3.0 probably won’t cut it anyway. You also have last priority as a transfer from another 4-year school (behind CCC applicants and intercampus applicants). Film has a 2.76% admit rate; the admit rate from SFSU is ~5%. Since you’ve taken statistics, you should be able to deduce what that that might mean…

I’m not saying to not apply…it’s only $70 after all…just don’t expect too much. Realistically, you should just finish your BA at SFSU. It doesn’t matter if you go to UCLA for undergrad or not; just go to UCLA for your masters.

Have you ever looked into USC’s film school?, they have a surperb one. If you cant get into UCLA, look into USC’s. They are actually better in the Film category.

I agree with druce1992, USC is much more renowned as a film school.

Also, the minimum GPA for UCLA is actually a 3.2 transferable GPA. Source: [Transfer Admission Guide - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/tradms.htm)
