this guy needs help.

hey ppl,
so, i will be attending the university of minnesota this fall, in about a months time frm now.
i wanted to know how much can u earn working on campus, for say 10 hrs a week??
i am an international student , so i can work on campus only. Id like to be able to make some buck , so plz give me an estimate , like min and max.
i read on some website that these jobs can pay frm 7 to 13 dollars an hour. is this true or what?

help help help!

minimum wage is 8 dollars an hour so you should make about 80 dollars a week if you work 10 hours minus a few dollars for taxes.

Yes at my university I have notice some jobs that offer up to 15 dollars an hour.

Minimum wage is actually $7.25/hr. Seems minor, but it makes a huge difference if you’re really trying to make money.

Minimum wage varies by state. Some states have a minimum wage higher than the Federal minimum.

In the state of Minnesota, the minimum wage is $6.15/hour for large business, which the university is. However, the federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour. Therefore, if you’re working in the state of Minnesota, you would receive at least $7.25/hour.

oh whoops sorry, its 8 in CA.

I don’t need to MAKE money ,I was going to work and just needed to know if I need some money each month from back home. Seems like I don’t. How mich do y’all spend each month , cell phone bills, etc inclusive???

If you’re trying to pay for rent & food $80/week isn’t going to get you anywhere.

Rent will vary hugely depending on where you live, I really can’t give you an estimate there. Even at cheapest, 2 guys in a studio apartment probably runs $250+/month each.
Food can easily run $50/week, more if you’re not careful.
I really have no idea what cell phone service costs, we have a family plan and I don’t pay for it.

If you have winter clothes, those should be your biggest expenditures.

Figure you’re going to spend about $200 eating out (this may or may not be an exaggeration -some people like to go out more than others.)

As for cell phones, you can always buy a pay as you go phone. TMobile and other carriers offer 1000minutes for $100. I use that and it lasts me anywhere from 2.5months to 4months depending if I have to coordinate with other people for a project.

Since you’re an international student, I’m going to assume you were assigned on campus housing meaning dormitories, so you won’t pay for that as it’s included in your overall bill for college.

Although I live in SoCal, where the weather is always nice (shameless plug), I rarely spend over $300 in a month (I know because I charge everything to a credit card). I only break $200 if I have to buy textbooks or reload my cell phone minutes. And I make more than $200 working, but I get paid $8.25/hour.

^
There are a lot more less expensive rates than 100 where you can nearly can unlimited everything.
With student discount at t-mobile I think you can get a rate between 50-60 dollars with nearly unlimited everything; this is with even more plus no contract.

Thanks! I will be living on campus, so no rent as such. Plus I have a meal plan but ev eats out too!
And the problem has been that mobile rates in the us are so exorbitantly priced compared to what we have here in india that it just umm … Surprised me a little.
