This IS a likely letter rite?

today i got a letter saying this from unc

"i write to thank you for your distinguished appliaction...we have already been impressed by your achievements and your potential. We believe you are an oustanding candidate..."

does this mean that i am probably in?

Sounds like it to me - congrats! Were you EA?

i got that too today! mine was date Nov 20 on the top though... is that kinda weird that it took a month and 4 days to get to me? im only 2 states away..

Congrats to you and a Merry Christmas you will surely have! :)

and i was EA

I guess that is what it is. I got one today too, and I live in Alabama.

Sounds like UNC sent a 'second round' of likely letters late last week. Congrats to those who received!

For those who didn't get a likely letter; don't be discouraged. From what I've heard on other postings only a small % of those accepted get the 'likely' letter.

Happy Holidays to Future Tarheels!
Liz

Really? Because(on this forum at least) a lot of people seem to get likely letters. Almost everybody, in fact. Maybe this is just because the kids on CC are motivated. Are you sure that likely letters are only sent to the top applicants?

someone on the other forum applied last year with a 1500+ (out of 1600) SAT and did NOT get a likely letter, but was admitted EA. don't know how they determine who gets one, but I believe less than half of those admitted receive one.

I don't understand who gets the likely letters either. My son is OOS and has stats equal to or higher than students that received the likely letters. He has great ECs etc. Can't wait for Jan. 5.

idk how they determine who gets a likely letter and who doesn't.

These are both instate examples.

My friend who is like 21/273, and 2070 SAT got one.
I am 11/273 and 33 ACT, and did not get one.

Maybe it's not all about #s. As some have said on other threads, UNC reads the essays and values that input. Then again, I have no idea of the inner workings of the adcom.

If you get a "likely letter" what are the chances you will get a letter of acceptance? 70% or so?

Thanks!

One more question: Are likely letters like unofficial acceptances?

Does anyone know of someone who(barring a major problem) got a likely letter but was rejected?

If you guys don't, it would go a long way towards making me feel better about January 15th.

what's the point of likely letters . i don't really get the reason behind it. just seems to cause confusion/suspense

what is the purpose of sending these letters out, does it mean that you got in or what? I received one yesterday but it was dated Nov 20. Can someone explain this a little bit more?

Got an email last week saying "You are part of a diverse group of academically impressive high school seniors. Through a thorough review of your courses, grades, essays, activities, and letters of recommendation, the admissions committee feels we’ve gotten to know you better. We are very impressed with your accomplishments, and look forward to notifying you of our final decision in a few weeks." - Does this sound like a likely letter?

Yes, snoz, you are in! Have a very Merry Christmas! I went through this last year and it all started with that kind of e-mail, it was worded a little differently, but along the same lines.

hey snoz are in instate or out

Mark, i'm instate. Hope this is true. Look forward to seeing you around campus someday.
