“Mark Broughton, the victim’s father is what’s wrong with this world we live in.”

Not sure why (at least on my phone) my post is listed before the post I’m reacting to. In any case: Huh? Sure, it is possible he is in denial. It is also possible that the story hasn’t been reported entirely accurately and the family wishes to set the record straight. Were you at the party where all of this occurred, "just"aMom?

Seems the Dad is not saying “not my son” on a lot of the issues. The Huffington Post link by jonri only has a minute portion of what the Dad has said.

That headline is misleading, because the article doesn’t say what, specifically, the father objects to. He may be primarily objecting to the suggestion that there was sexual assault, for example.

Many underaged students are treated for alcohol poisoning without their names being released. I’m not defending his actions but I don’t see there being a need to release his name, forever inscribed in google.

Apparently this isn’t just a fraternity issue. They were prosecuting the 45 year old wife whose 58 year old husband died. Then they dismissed it after passing a bunch of criminal trial settings.

Actually, I would say that reading a misleading headline and then leaping to an easy condemnation is a perfect example of the decline of public discourse in our nation.

I recently went to a small rural locality and read the local paper. It published the names of people charged with crimes. It included their mug shots even though none had been convicted of anything. yes, its all on the internet. Scary

This topic checks my ‘learn something new every day’ box. That said, my life would have been complete without this knowledge and the related visual image now burning in my mind!

Wait, he’s over 18, isn’t that considered an “adult” for releasing name, etc.?

I still believe the dad is playing the “not my son” (placed/had placed tubing in his rectum to “ingest” alcohol; was “unresponsive” - whatever).

I imagine the idea of “sexual assault” would be someone else placed tubing in his rectum.

Regardless of anything, this story is upsetting on many levels.

The first article says no criminal charges have been filed. So why are they releasing the name of a hospital patient?

This story is troubling, but honestly, to me it’s troubling in the same way as a report that, say, a kid was seriously injured after jumping off the roof of the frat house onto a trampoline. It is stupid behavior that hurt somebody.

Do the contents of a headline change much of the relevant facts? Does anyone expect anything from the attention-grabbing headlines that are now daily fodder from garbage reporters such as Huff Po or AOL, which might be just a few steps below the Groupon ads in terms of integrity? Today’s media is what it is, and that is not a compliment.

The fact that a father denies or minimizes the negatives in the reports is exactly what anyone would expect from a parent. That should not come as a surprise. What are his options? To admit that he exercised no real parental control, or assumed (always erroneously) that the school will comply with its “promise” to provide support and safety, and be there for his son? Well, blame him to be just as naive as millions of other parents! Should we blame him for not understanding the nefarious influence from a number of organizations that pollute most campuses in our nation? Again, he is in good company.

In the end, the accuracy of the report is not really relevant; neither is the expected denial by the parents. What is relevant is that countless barbarian acts are perpetrated on a daily basis within our schools, or in close proximity. The only question relates to the number of body bags that will be needed for the last crop of freshmen!

While the death toll increases year after year, there are no visible changes. And surely none that could be positive. The denial by the parents is understandable and excusable. The cynical denial by school officials is nothing else than a tragedy and a national disgrace. All they offer is blah-blah and more blah, when ACTIONS are needed. The common denominators for most egregious cases are well-known, and almost always contain greek letters, or an athletic affiliation!

It is all about self-preservation above any regard to the innocents or victims. Just as the events at PSU demonstrated. Watch ESPN on a Saturday and it has been business as usual. And so it goes!
