this is the stupidest question ever but... how do you memorize words?????

how on earth do you memorize all those 500,000,000,000 words??? that's an exaggeration there with the numbers... but it seems impossible!

My way..

For example barrons word list...

Read the page the first time, the second time try the guess the words and third time try to memorize the words you didn't know.

And voila you have the words in the pocket

My way:

I read over the words and their definitions.

I have someone test me on them.

I go back and look at the ones I missed.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you know all of them.

For the SAT, my way... don't bother memorizing

For other things like vocabulary in school, I read through the words and defs once, then cover the definitions and see if I know the words, and go back and read the ones I didn't know. After doing a few pages of words, I go back and retest myself (or have someone else test me) on all the words.

Read the newspaper...

but seriously, you don't need to memorize THAT many words.
Maybe 200...but not like thousands.

Also, memorizing roots, prefix and suffix, those things will help you more bc you can deduce meaning from words you don't know.

I memorized things by just using index cards...

flashcards rule! I have a shoebox full of flashcards... hehe

I agree! flashcards are awesome! I'm making 20 flashcards everyday and it's really working to me!

You don't. I just learned that I can't memorize easily at all, so I don't try. Latin was ALWAYS a struggle for me.

If you really want to memorize vocab and are motivated, I would recommend flashcards. The important thing is to spend a LOT of time with the vocab. For example, since eighth grade, I have tried to memorize the Barron's 3500 word list. . .I am a rising junior, and I still don't know around 5% of the words. . .so basically, if you have time to, go for it. . .if you don't, I think a high frequency list and luck will have to do. . .
