This Is Us. Anyone watching?

I like the last episode a lot (I just caught up). I like that the kids get some tough stuff to deal with (just like real kids). I appreciated Tess & Deja’s conversation - and I love that the show isn’t glossing over sensitive and important issues for teens.

Wow, I’m the first one to comment on this week? Must have been the competition of the debates.

Comments:

  • Randall and Beth continue to just make me fall in love with them more each week. They make me laugh, they make me cry. The writers give them great energy and lines. Beth “she is not hanging out with a boy who puts babies into someone’s body!” - cracked me up. And her love - and talent - for dance. The cute slice of lemon story.
  • Toby and Kate - I wanted to shout “Kate why didn’t YOU pack the monkey!!” I do think the way the writers are portraying the process of realizing and learning about how to handle Jack’s disability is pretty realistic. Toby is still a saint to me.
  • Did we know that Kevin and Sophie actually married so young??? I felt unprepared for that - but I have a terrible memory. Kevin buying the RV was a little over the top…and is Nicky in LA? I was thinking he was on the east coast. Isn’t everyone on the west coast in the “present” except for Randall’s family??
  • Liked the story line of Beth’s mom and Rebecca - and Rebecca coming home and Kate asking her to dance (I have to work to like teen Kate - loved her in that moment) and that seeming to be the turning point for Rebecca moving on (she mentions a new place to live).

I think the writers purposely didn’t mention how young Kevin and Sophie got married. I just read an interview where they said this has always been part of the plan, but they wanted to unveil the news at just the right time.

Kevin seems to be a free spirit and lives all over the place! I liked how sweet he was with his fans. That must get old.

I liked Beth’s mom telling Randall she’d been wrong about him.

I am dumbstruck by how phylicia rashad can look vastly different between her ages on this show, and even that on greys anatomy. Also i love all the Kate actresses. They nailed them in looks and demeanor.

@abasket, not the debates, baseball delayed watching for me!

Kevin went east to Uncle Nicky’s rescue and stayed there. I loved that he plopped his RV right next to Nick’s. It doesn’t require a permanent move, yet gives him a reason/place to come back to - for Nick or Cassidy.

I loved the lemon offering, saw it happen, but was confused. I love the teen Beth actress’ facial expressions - so much like adult Beth’s. Casting nailed that one.

Agree that the age transition for Phylicia Rashad was impressive; but Catherine Avery Fox on Grey’s Anatomy is not Phylicia, but played by her sister, Debbie Allen.

The east/west coast thing is so confusing for me! So then with the new Kevin love interest on the east coast he will probably be hanging out there more.

Due to being out of town, I watched last week’s episode on Monday night and this week’s “live” on Tuesday night. So the two run somewhat together in my mind. I’m really enjoying this season so far with the Kate/Toby story being my least favorite mainly because I see them setting up for separation.

The stories and the acting have been top notch. I too was struck by Phylicia Rashad’s differing appearance and mannerisms in the college time period and the now. Also, read up on the actor portraying Gregory the neighbor. The only show I’ve seen him on was Galavant but I totally didn’t recognize him or know what had happened to him.

My take on the Kevin buying the RV was that Kevin really liked looking at the RVs, and probably the guy offered a good deal, and he decided he wanted one for himself. Then he needed a place to put it. Although a little vague on whether that was Nicky’s property or did the next plot of land just happen to be for sale too?

But it was cute. I also liked the interaction with the wife of the RV place owner and felt that it was probably spot on with how the actor himself interacted with fans. Or hoped that he did. Not sure what’s going on with Cassidy?. I think they’re setting up us to believe they will be romantically involved but then there will be some This is Us twist.

I don’t think people in Western Pennsylvania (where everyone grew up, and where Nicky still lives, in a rural area) think of themselves as living on “the East Coast.”

I wish Randall hadn’t fired the experienced secretary in his office. I loved her! Her speech was the first remotely realistic moment in the entire ridiculous plotline of Randall becoming a Philadelphia city councilman.

“Sorry” for the east coast reference. Maybe I should have said “more east”. East as opposed to west.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and got the east/West reference Not coast but still “east” , Lots of good scenes- also liked the lemon one…

Was it just me and my son or did anyone else think Beth’s dancing was horrible? What type of style was that? My son turned to me & said “I don’t think she’s going to sign up any students at that open house after that performance”.

The rest of the episode was good. I often wondered why Kevin wasn’t recognized more on the show. Seems like they just make him recognizable when it’s part of the storyline and the rest of the time, no one notices him.

I thought Taysha was older than 9th grade. She seemed about that old when they first got her. She actually looks older than the junior she is dating and she’s way more mature than my current sophomore.

I didn’t get the dancing either- didn’t seem like anything special at all. But I know nothing about how dance is taught well.

I have always loved Kevin!

Maybe you were expecting her to be doing traditional ballet. I have seen her dance before and I like it! (she and Sterling are famous for doing little dance skits on the set).

Good episode last night. I really like Kevin this season. Lots of new mysteries. I wonder what happened with Kate and the record-store guy.

I bet record boyfriend assaulted her. Lots of grooming foreshadowing. Did it bother anyone else they were slicing butter and not ice cream?

Also, i predict the assault led Kate to her becoming the size she is.

Silver purple, I missed the red flags. I tend to watch TV while doing other things. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll go back and watch again.

@silverpurple , I thought that was pretty easy frozen ice cream to cut. It really did look like butter.

I’m enjoying this episode. I’m amazed at how well the actors playing the younger triplets do such a great job mimicking the older ones mannerisms.

^I love teenage/college-aged Beth!!

I read an article that said they had to use a butter-like substance so it wouldn’t melt.
