this may seem weird but...

i am an asian living in southern california. i am considering UCSB and it feels awkward to be around more caucasion people. in high school most of the caucasions were jocks and i didn't really feel comfortable around them. i know that i will need to face this some day and i will not be around people of "my kind" forever. i was just wondering if it is easy to make friends at UCSB. sorry if this is a dumb post

I know what you mean. I was afraid that I would feel out of place with all the white, blonde surfer kids at UCSB. However, I just was there today, and can tell you that there were a ton of Asians as well as African Americans, Latinos, and East Indians. I think the statistic is that about half of UCSB is white, and the rest aren't.

yeah, im also asian and going to ucsb. Don't listen to the stereotypes, like JoKaA said, theres a good amount of diversity throughout the campus. As long as you're pretty social and friendly, you'll be fine. Maybe at first it will be uncomfortable for you and awkward, but you'll get used to it.

Don't worry about it, we're all from California and in AP classes. It gives every UCSB student plenty of exposure to Asians. My school's demographics are pretty similar to UCSB's (probably a little more White), but my AP classes have plenty of Asians. We get along fine and intermix, and I have plenty of Asian friends. Not to mention that UCSB is only 52% White. Those demographics are similar to California's racial makeup, which is 60% White and 12% Asian. It seems like you've built yourself a bit of a cultural shelter, and it might be more advantageous for you to break out of it and expose yourself to demographics that are more representative of what you'll face when you graduate from Santa Barbara.

yeah had same situation in high school

I'm not sure how deep your discomfort runs (UC Irvine comes to mind), but:

The facts are, in Fall 2006,
American Indian/Alaskan Native 1%
African American 3%
Chicano 15%
Latino 5%
Asian/Pacific Islander/E. Indian/Pakistani 15%
Filipino 3%
Caucasian 56%
Other 2%

There are cultural/ethnic organizations ! For ex., Chinese American Association, Taiwanese American Student Association, Hong Kong Student Association, Vietnamese Student Association, KP (Filipino Student Association). They're pretty active on campus, too.

well if u really feel uncomfortable...think about ur other optios...what other schools did u get into??
