Is the textbook really not used in the class? I keep hearing that he teaches out of a seperate course reader instead of the textbook, but I don't want to not get the textbook and get screwed over later. Is the textbook used for both 20A and 20B? If so, I think I might just get it just in case I don't have Scerri for 20B.

I bought the old version of the textbook for something like $5 and it worked just fine. The exercises were exactly the same and he even gave the problem numbers for them in the old (5th) edition.

It’s the same textbook for 20A and 20B, so get the newest one, which you’ll probably need for 20B, even if you can use the old one for 20A.

And yes, the course reader for scerri is the most important resource, but don’t skimp. Just get the stupid textbook.

and search for “scerri preacher” (or something like that) on youtube

I think all of the youtube videos have been taken down.

what’s the difference between the two textbooks posted online? there’s Princ Mod Chem (6th) W/custom Ssm and Princ Mod Chem (6th). The custom Ssm one is required but the other is optional. what i didn’t quite understand was that the optional one is expensive too and i was wondering why anyone would pay that much more, even if it is optional.

One is the textbook+solutions manual (the required one), and the other is just the textbook itself (the optional one). Even though they say the one with custom ssm is required, it really isn’t…its just recommended. If you don’t get that, then get the optional book and not the required one. Just choose one or the other.

SCERRI FOR THE WIN!
SCERRI FOR THE WIN!
SCERRI FOR THE WIN!

Say it with me, folks!

I don’t understand why people care so much about the attitude of a professor if it’s one of the introductory courses and you’re with 300 other students. Unless you’re one of those students who struggle to understand concepts and need the one-on-one attention with the teacher, it’s not likely that you’ll have any personal interaction with him. If Scerri were a research professor and you were seeking to be in his lab, then that’s a different story.

Scerri ftw.
