Alright so I'm currently a sophomore Econ/Phil major at Texas Tech Univ (hometown school) and looking to get out. I really would just like to apply to 3-4 schools but need help deciding which schools I actually have a shot at.

HS Stats
GPA: 4.8 UW, 3.97 W
Scores: 2130 SAT (750M, 660CR, 720W), 32 ACT, mostly 3s and 4s on APs
IB diploma grad
EC: 2 yr Varsity baseball letterman (1 yr captain), Student Body VP, Presidential Cabinet member, various other activities and awards

College Stats
GPA: 3.94 (had one B+ from a stubborn prof and couldn't appeal it, but everything else is As and A+s)
Honors College Student (if that counts for anything...)
Newspaper opinion columnist (write mostly about economic issues, won several journalism awards the past year)
Housing Ambassador (solid WE, 40 hrs/week)
Head Coach of a high school jv baseball team (volunteer, 20+ hrs/week)
I also did some pretty intense logic research with a big time prof on campus

I'm def applying to Cornell ILR (first choice by far) and Rice (dream school but WL in high school) but what chances do you guys think I have at these two and
UVA (OOS)
Vandy (legacy)
UChicago
Columbia (not likely I know)
and maybe...
Northwestern
Penn
Yale
MIT
Stanford
Williams
Amherst

I would like to transfer for the spring but am open to next fall as well. Out of those, I really only want to apply to 2 or 3, any ideas?

Just wondering, if you were from Texas and were in the top 10% of your class, why not UT? They would have given you scholarship and probably Honors/Plan2.

I think you have a strong shot at any of these schools. Cornell over-enrolled for class of 2009 so it may be tough, but I think you’re more than strong enough to get in. You have a very strong application to Rice too. I don’t know about the others

I could never go to UT. I’ve grown up in Lubbock a huge Tech fan. In fact, my great great grandfather founded the school. I’m a 5th generation Tech student and when my sis didn’t go, I felt like I had to attend. But now I feel like I’ve given everything I can to the school and I’m ready to move on. If I get into any of these schools thats great, but if not then I’ll be happy here at Tech. While I understand honors/plan 2 are excellent programs, there is a certain sense of entitlement everyone at UT thinks they have which I don’t want to be associated with. If I were anyone else in Texas though, it would’ve been easy.

Yeah, I have to agree that the top 10% entitlement is kind of lame in many ways and keeps real diversity (diversity of talent) out of the campus. The same thing at my state school, where there is a tuition waiver for all students who do well on some bullsiht state standardized test; besides this, there are very few scholarships outside of engineering.

They’ve actually just announced that they’re getting rid of the 10% rule. The new rule only guarantees that only 2/3 of students in the top 10% will be accepted to Texas state universities. This rule really only affects UT, but its probably good anyways, there are so many pompous arseholes down there that feel like they’re going to an “elite” school when they were really just gauranteed admission.

Vandy- I say you have a really great chance of getting in. Vanderbilt has a really great campus, and the area around it is one of the best in nashville.
Columbia- Since they get 2000 + applicants and they have like 100 slots, it is really competitive. There really isn’t much to say, but if your applying, do really good on the application.
Northwestern - I think Northwestern is the 2nd best chance school for you to get in- I mean, almost for anyone who has a 3.7 + college GPA, they have a respective shot.
Penn- They accept the same percentage of transfers as their freshman class. (17%)
Yale- Really low, probably the most selective ivy. less than 4% transfers. They accept around 30 out of almost 1000.
Stanford - Really low acceptance rate. like 2%. There’s no harm in trying though.
Amherst - Not sure, but I know, their acceptance rate is around 6%. super selective but what a great school.

Since your an econ major, have you thought about Georgetown- from what other people say they seem to have a really great program there- . Of course, Penn has wharton, which is premier. Good luck on deciding, its going to be us next year, Transfers 2010-2011.

Amherst accepted about fifteen students this year…if you are applying just keep in mind that you don’t need to send in your SAT scores! I heard it’s better not to unless you have 2300~2400.

I say you have a very good chance for Cornell ILR!

What was your IB score?

I just got accepted to ILR Fall Transfer and I’ll be going. I did IB up here in Canada, and even tho my hs grades were comparatively average (that’s the thing my freshman application univs looked at, not final mark), I got a 42 final IB score and was first in my grad class. Your hs GPAs are better than mine and my SATs are similar to yours at 2260. Your college GPA is wonderful as well. So yea, hope to see you at Cornell in the future! Make sure you cater your essay towards ILR.

UVA (OOS)- Depending on your major, you have a solid shot. McIntire only takes about 30 students every year, and 70% of those students are Virginia residents and/ or Virginia community college student, which leaves about 10-15 slots for out of state applicants, due to the 10-15% of international students, so you may even have a stronger shot at Wharton.
Vandy (legacy)- I’d say you’re a shoe-in. Vanderbilt is one of the easier top schools to transfer into, I know someone who got in this year with like a 3.4 GPA from Tulane and there high school GPA was nothing spectacular.
UChicago- Not sure, as far as I know, it’s pretty hard to transfer into U of Chicago.
Columbia (not likely I know)- Actually for Columbia GS, I think you’d have a very, very strong shot. I know quite a few transfers who got into GS with stats very similar to yours.
and maybe…
Northwestern- I’d say very strong match.
Penn- Depends on school, match.
Yale- Craphshoot.
MIT- Crapshoot.
Stanford- Almost impossible, very slim chance for anyone.
Williams- Not sure.
Amherst- Match.

Wow guys, thanks a lot. You have all been very helpful and I really appreciate your feedback. I think though, that I’m going to apply to transfer for the spring semesters at:
Cornell (ILR)
Rice
UVA (Arts and Sciences)
Amherst
If I get into any of them then thats great, if not, then I may wait to see where/if I get in at Penn/Vandy/Columbia/Stanford for the next fall. Right now though, I’m loving everything about ILR at Cornell, it fits everything I want to do, I’m just not crazy about the weather.

BTW: great job on your IB scores! That’s really impressive, it wasn’t very big at my school and I ended up getting about a 34 or so, I can’t really remember.

I know this was written about a year ago now but I am in the exact same boat! Literally. I am also at Texas Tech and it was definitely a generational thing… Im the third generation to attend and my entire family has graduated from here. Although I really do love it, I just can’t get over the feeling that I can do better. I have considered UT, but like you said, just could not bring myself to wear the burnt orange. It’s a Texas school rivalry thing. But so now I am looking to transfer for the spring, and just wondering if you ever made it out or if you are still here?
