thoughts from an incoming UCLA freshman

soo... i move in on sept. 19th to deneve dogwood ! which is in like four days.... and i'm super excited ! but kinda nervous too. i'm looking forward to welcome week and all the activities and meeting new people, but the thought of moving out and being on my own, away from family, lifestyle changes kinda makes me anxious. but that's normal...

i ordered all my textbooks listed on the site from half.com and i'm happy that i saved a bunch of $$ by avoiding the UCLA bookstore. what else have i done? oh yeah i completed that bs alcohol edu thing... turned in the PLUS application, did financial stuff/uship/hep B/other online stuff, and went dorm shopping ! i feel like i have to do more stuff before school starts haha.

i had a blast at orientation and met soo many people, and i can't wait till i go back to UCLA. i know orientation was fun and college life is no way like it; i'm just saying i loved the campus/environment/atmosphere/food !

soooooo yeah, just sharing some thoughts... will post more as stuff happens :)

WOO! diary of a new bruin, 2nd edition :D

Makes me wish I started one for my year, but I guess 2011ers are way lazy. :p

im nervous about making friends :|

mr muffin, i'm nervous about that too. i think everyone is !

don't worry; you have all your CC friends... and if you have facebook, maybe we can be friends on there too :)

i dont have cc friends lol ahhhhhh

you'll be fine, you'll meet new friends as long as you want to be a friend, if you lock yourself in the room then you won't be as social... my best advice is open your door and meet as many people as you can on your floor, you'll hang out with them a lot... plus the RAs always have like floor dinners and stuff so meeting friends is EZ!

pink, you are 2011 too? i always thought you were way older... well not way older more like 2010 or 2009...:)

same here.. I don't want to leave my rooooooom :[

haha i thought the same thing about MrPink, older and such

oh and if anyone here wants to be facebook friends, PM me ! :) :)

same here :)

incoming freshman here too. facebook :]

i come from a high school which sends very little people to UCLA (most go to Cal or SFSU). i think coming here without any past baggage is very liberating. a clean slate, if you will.

dont worry about the nervousness, cuz the beauty of it is that most everyone else is nervous like you.

i'm a transfer and im nervous about making friends too. I'm not very easy-going and ppl might not understand me, but I think im very nice tho
:)

yeah, it felt great :).

and i thought pink was 2010, too..whoops. lol. get her confused with moldau sometimes.

From my own college experience, here are a few tips I've picked up when it comes to "making friends" at college:

Avoid cliques. It's understandable that while you're going to a new place and being on your own this will naturally exacerbate certain insecurities, but don't end up staying huddled inside of a clique just because it feels "safe." Be confident with yourself and be engaging. Talk to whoever is next to you.

Also be open minded. Again, don't let insecurities get the best of you and tempt you to judge and tear down other people so you can feel better about yourself. This isn't high school. Instead, be excited by the wide diversity of people you will meet and their inevitable differences and quirks. You'll find that some surprising kinds of people will end up being your best friends.

Best of luck!

this is really cute.
i'm glad you had fun during orientation - if you're really into school-spiritedy stuff, i think SAA or working with ORL or ASUCLA within some context would be interesting for you.

ditto china about coming in with clean slate - no one cept me came to this school and its made all the difference

and i thought pink was 2010, too..whoops. lol. get her confused with moldau sometimes.
uhh.... if there's no mention of anal, its probably pink -_-;

I'm moving in on the 19th to Dogwood as well, and honestly, I feel more anxiety than excitement. I can guarantee you that the night before I will be tossing and turning in my bed with a horrible twisting in my stomach.

^oh... i didnt sleep the first night. i was in a triple... the three of us knew the others were wide awake but all was silent. i could hear someone shooting a basketball outside... oh deneve...

you guys didn't talk each other into sleep? :) tell stories or something

i found out Sproul is mostly upperclass...im bummed...my roommates and i will be the only freshman
