I was asked by two posters in this thread to explain “Why ?” UF should offer automatic admissions based on class rank & minimum standardized test scores for Florida high school students. In responding, I googled the mission statements of three state universities–Texas, Georgia & Florida. I was a bit surprised by the use of the phrase “exclusive public education” with respect to UF.
The mission statement no longer appears among the first items after a google search.
Apparently it was from The Strategic Plan of the State Board of Governors (which was updated within the last 30 days in October, 2019).
"The mission of the University of Florida as described in the Strategic Plan of the State Board of Governors: “The University of Florida is committed to educating students so they are prepared to make significant contributions within an increasingly global community offering a broad-based, exclusive public education, leading edge research, and service to the citizens of Florida, the nation and the world.”
Although the google search no longer reveals the documents containing this phrase among the top items, as it did just one day ago when I googled “mission statement University of Florida”, you can google “exclusive public education University of Florida” and among the responses will be some recent & some older UF documents.
@fl1234: I have nothing against UF as you wrongfully allege–I was just responding to this thread & to other posters requests in this thread that I explain “Why?”.
Of relevance to this thread in the Strategic Plan of the State Board of Governors, however, is a clearly stated goal regarding “rankings” and regarding “percentage of students ranking in the top 10% of their high school class.”
This, of course, suggests that my position is in line with that of the Board of Governors which oversees the entire university of Florida system with respect to admitting students based on high school class rank. Unfortunately, my position & the position of this Board appear to be for different reasons. The Board indicates a clear desire to be a top ranked public university and notes that percentage of students in the top 10% of their class is a factor used in the rankings. My concern is to benefit all Florida citizens & counties–not to satisfy US News ratings methods.
@Publisher You misrepresented it by excluding the other 90% of the mission statement that mirrors what you praised UT-Austin’s statement. UF’s says “societal benefit” and UT’s says “benefit of society”. All of these schools have similar statements, just worded differently.
You cherry-picked, that is misrepresenting. What’s your beef with UF?
I have no “beef” with UF. I am just participating in this thread.
Please stop your personal attacks against me @fl1234 as they seem to violate the terms of service & I do not want to get into a debate or other improper discussion.
Again, I am just participating in this thread topic.
