Thoughts on Covenant and Whitworth?

Covenant College, GA and Whitworth University, WA

I think I'll be applying to both of these school so I would love to get more opinions on them. They're on opposite sides of the country but I love them both a lot as much as I know about them, not having visited.

So, how are the academics and the atmosphere of the classes? Is there a lot of emphasis on Religion within course material or is it more separated? Also, how intense is the Christian aspect in both? I feel like I'm ready to develop my faith because as I've grown up in a family which hasn't really forced it upon me and allowed me to explore it for myself. My parents for some reason seem to be wary about me attending a really Christian school in the fear of being closed off and sheltered from the wider world? Also, how conservative or liberal are the school on a whole?

Thank you so much and sorry for all the questions :)

I know several people who went to Whitworth. They absolutely loved it. Your parents don’t need to fear it. It is Christian but moderate to slightly liberal. You will be able to explore your faith without pressure. The academics are excellent.

My husband and I attended Covenant College many years ago, and my DD pursued Covenant on her college search last year. She ended up choosing another school, but Covenant was #2 choice.

My husband and I both had great experiences at Covenant. I was challenged to figure out what I believed, not just to carry on with what my parents or my church leaders had taught me. I thought the school was a little too small and a bit isolated from the “real world” during our time there. But so much has changed, the student population has doubled, the students are allowed to sponsor dances, music and art festivals, and there is a global emphasis on serving others. The college is intentional in engaging students in service projects in the area.

The rules and regulations at Covenant are in line with their denominational beliefs, but they are more common sense, not legalistic.

The campus is beautiful, situated on top of a small mountain. The student community is close knit. Instead of having greek life, the halls in the dorms become the “group” that you connect with. You will find a variety of “thinkers” on campus, a variety of “types” of students, with 1000 students there is now enough students to find your place and feel at home.

Covenant is the official college of the PCA denomination. The PCA is a conservative, evangelical denomination, and all the professors at the college sign a statement of faith. I did say Conservative, NOT Fundamental. There are open discussions in classes, and you are taught HOW to think, not WHAT to think.

Covenant College is worth a visit. Plan to stay long enough to visit classes, stay overnight in a dorm, and see some of the beauty of the surrounding area. Get an appointment to meet with a professor. The profs at Covenant sometimes do research or write books or go on speaking engagements, but their main job is to teach students. As far as I know, there are not Teaching Assistants. The teachers are eating in the dining hall with students, attending the theatre productions, and inviting students to their homes.

PM me with any more questions you have. Can you tell I love Covenant?! I have not heard of Whitworth, so can’t give you any comparisons. Good luck with your college search!

Thank you both! Your input really helped me see a difference between the two and now I’m hoping to visit some time soon as well :)

Please feel free to PM me if you have any more questions about Covenant. Good luck to you, so glad you will get to visit both schools. There is no one college right for everyone, it takes some effort to discover which one is the right fit for you.

One of my closest friends is currently at Covenant. I know it is really small, but he has nothing but good things to say.

I have heard very good things about Whitworth. My cousin is currently attending and has had a fantastic experience in their biology department. Beautiful campus, and the guaranteed merit scholarships are a big plus.

Whitworth has student profiles/video testimonials on their website, which I found very helpful. You might try looking through those.
