Thoughts on SDSU, CSUN, SFSU, and CSULA

How is the reputation of these four schools? I would like to study Sociology with an emphasis in Criminal Justice. I would like to attend SDSU, but I don’t know if I can get in due to the many applicants. Is it possible to graduate in 4 years? How is the area around the schools? I am from Tennessee and would like to go to college in California. Cost is not an issue. Thanks!!!

Are you looking at any CA private schools? Chapman, LMU, USD, Redlands, etc. With some merit aid, it may well end up cheaper than OOS at a CSU. Also, getting out in 4 years from a private should be a given.

I believe CSUN has only been taking applicants from their local service area for the last few year(?).

CSULA is fine school, but it is not in a nice part of town and not would I consider a “destination school.” There are quite a few CSUs that fall into the same category.

If you’re hell bent on a CSU school, then consider SDSU, Long Beach & Fullerton for So Cal. SFSU, Sonoma & Chico for No Cal.

I agree with you. I also applied to Concordia- Irvine and Redlands. I would rather attend a public school though. I have a CSU GPA of 3.69 and a 24 Act score. Could I get in Long Beach? I am really attracted to CSULA though because they have a good criminal justice program.

CSU Fullerton also has a good Criminal Justice Program so you might want to add that school on to your CSU application and an easier admit than SDSU and CSU Long Beach. Also located in a nicer area than CSULA and close to Southern California attractions such as Disneyland, Knotts, beach areas, Angel Stadium…

I heard CSUF doesn’t admit out of staters though.

You have a better chance as an OOS applicant at CSU Fullerton than Northridge.

I’m not an expert, but those numbers seem low for LB. Each year, SDSU & LB get ~ 80K applications!

You really need to get out here an have a look at some of these schools. Perhaps CSULA is exactly what you’re looking for. LA is a different kind of big city.

How much does school pedigree matter for jobs in the criminal justice world?

Seriously I thought CSUN was an easy school to get in. The Average Act is low.

I don’t think CSUN took any CA residents outside of their geographical service area in the last two years. So if they only take those students, then the numbers would be lower.

Google up CSU service areas to get a better understanding. But all CA residents have a designed CSU school in their service area in which they are admitted with priority (and lower stats).

CSUN is not difficult based on Stats but has been heavily impacted the last few years and has only accepted local in-service area applicants for the most part. Definitely worth an application, but it will be hard to predict if they accept outside their local area.

Being outside the local area and acceptance will rely heavily on your Eligibility index: http://www.csun.edu/admissions-records/freshman-impaction

Thank you. I chose Sociology. It doesn’t seem to be impacted. Do I have a chance? I like the location of CSULA the most since it is near downtown.

Cannot say what kind of chances you have for CSUN, again it will depend on if they will accept many non-local applicants. CSULA should definitely be a Match.

Downtown LA is hard to explain. It has become more desirable over the last few years, but it’s different than being close to downtown of other big cities. That’s my take as a lifelong CA resident (I also worked downtown for ~ 10 years as well).

My $.02: there are very few locals who would chose CSULA over Fullerton, Long Beach, CP Pomona or CSUN. Nothing against the school, but just trying to paint a realistic picture.

If I get accepted to Northridge, then I will probably go with that one. I was just thinking Cal State LA since they are supposed to have a very good forensic science program.

Cool - try to come out to So Cal for a few days and visit all these schools.

Again, really do the math on the privates, getting out of CSU in 4 years can be tough. My niece is at Fullerton and she’s in some “get out in 4 years program.” Not sure what it’s called, but she gets priority registration so she can get all her classes.

Good luck!

Several CSU’s have the 4 year pledge program or Finish in Four programs:

Thank you very much guys for all of the info. The more I read about Fullerton, the more I am impressed. I am going to visit California in March if I get accepted to any of the schools. Hope your niece graduates on time. Thanks!!!

If you don’t mind me asking, what is wrong with the area around Cal State LA? Every forum I have read talks how bad of a area it is. I read somewhere where it is becoming a hippie friendly area and that seems like that would be nice.

What are your stats?
Are you willing to consider private schools too?

3.69 CSU GPA I think and 24 Act. I have applied to Concordia-Irvine and University of La Verne
