So Im an out of state applicant to the UMN and I have been accepted into the college of biological sciences (Hopefully majoring in biochemistry). I was wondering if you guys could give me feed back on the school as well as thoughts on the honour programme. I applied to the honour programme but I havent gotten word if I've been accepted in it. If you have any information about when those decisions that would be helpful as well as information about their marching band and I guess the general area, campus life, ect. A little information about myself is I'm a muscian (I play trumpet) and I'm section leader during marching season as well as first chair trumpet in concert band I'm in NHS,HOSA, a member of the Leadership programme at my school. I plan on becoming a neurosurgeon so any information about pre-med would be useful as well. Thats all the information I can thinknof for right now. Thank you for reading this and I cant wait to read your responses! :)

They have reasonably cheap out of state tuition, which makes Minnesota a very intelligent choice.

It’s a really underrated school because it’s not very selective( compared to its peers) and its reaallly big. However, UMN is becoming more and more selective every year to get rid of these problems.

For GRAAAAAAAAAAD Biology/Biological Sciences it’s 32 ranked in the nation so far.

We should see its rankings rise in years to come. Soon it should be along the rest of its Big Ten Peers. (UMad, UIllinois (Maybe even Michigan)). It’s definitely not a bad school but it sometimes get a bad rep for being big but as you can see its acceptence rates are steadily decreasing.

Its OOS tuition is also veryyyyy affordable comparedto its peers (especially most of the Big Ten Conference schools haha)

Its also ranked as 50.most beautiful campus on one list

Thats good, Im hoping to get a good scholarship here the only thing that scares me is the cold because it’s so far north.

Ahh yes, I agreeeeeeeeee but its a whole new life.

Did you go there or currently attending there right now?

My D got the Honors Program acceptance a week after admitting to CSE. You will see that in a box under the acceptance on the tracker.

A week okay because My application was finished at the begining of October and I found out I was accepted on Saturday so If I dont hear anything in a week should I give up on hoping that I was accepted or contact the school?

Not all honors program decisions are made right away. I think they still send them in March (and possibly after if spots are left unfilled by students who choose to attend a different school?)

I would not contact the U unless you haven’t heard anything by March and your stats are above the average. For CBS I believe the average ACT score for an honors student is 33.4 and average class rank is 98.1. Honors admission is very competitive for the sciences, so if your stats are below that your chances aren’t very high.

Good luck!

Thank you. And my stats are bellow that, but that is mostly ,my act scores (28) I’m ranked 14/407 weighted ( which would be better for them to consider because unweighted I’m 49/407). So now I’m pretty scared about this :(

Don’t worry! You can still apply to get into the honors program after your freshman year.

[Admission After Freshman Year - Future Students - University of Minnesota](Admission After Freshman Year | honors)

The link above has more information. CBS is a great school and you will still be challenged and have many opportunities. It’s quite the accomplishment just to get in!

Thank you because I really wanted to get into the honour college because I’ve heard a lot of good things about it through research.

Any more thoughts for feedback?

Marching band is a big time commitment and seems to be, for better or worse, a built-in social group. Sorry I can’t give personal experience.

I think CBS is probably the best college academically. It would be a good choice provided that the finances work and you feel comfortable on campus.

Don’t sweat the honors decision. You can do research regardless.

Thank you for the feed back, the marching band comment sounds about accurate because that’s how high school marching band is for the most part
