Thoughts on Theatre as an EC

I have rarely encountered fellow theatre junkies in my browsing of these boards. It seems to be a fairly rare EC amongst the most illustrious students.

I guess I am just looking for opinions on why that is? I am a top student for stats standards, but my central EC besides numerous volunteering is school theatre. I started in 6th grade, and have worked my way up from minor roles to scoring leads in several straight plays in musicals. I am president of my thespian troupe. I have taken theatre classes throughout school. I have stayed at the school from 2:00pm to 11:00pm for rehearsals (dedication or insanity, you decide!). I have directed plays. I have been as active as you can be in my high school theatre.

So do you peoples of the internet believe that theatre is a "good" EC, per se? Does it show distinction and creativity? Or does it show some sort of off color artsy interest that an academic student shouldn't have? Responses and discussion all appreciated :)

Add. info: I have a perfect gpa, 35 act, and strong science focus (besides theatre of course)

Really? “Artsy interest that an academic student shouldn’t have?” Who says academic people can’t be artistic people too? I’m adding my drama experience, as well as all my other performing arts activates, to my application. (And yes, I am very academic) There isn’t some line between the smart and the creative. You can be both. Colleges wont look down on someone who has varied interests. In fact, its to your advantage to add it, especially if you’ve had big roles.

Theatre is a great EC. Its not as uncommon as you suggest. But, it says so many great things about a kid’s ability to put him or herself on the line, it’s a team activity, occurs over time- and can consume many hours. All good. But you should have this balanced with other school and community activities, incl vol work or comm service.

If you are interested in continuing with theatre in college, you might want to check your target schools to see if best roles go to seniors and some juniors or if they are offered more on merit, even to freshmen.
