Thread for all Juniors/Sophomores

Why I thank you most sincerely Keilexandra!!! I am Swiss on my mom's side and I went to Switzerland in ninth grade. I am mildly obsessed with the tranquil Alpine country!! eeee! lol I too have had scheduling conflicts. At my school Tennis is a class period as is Concert Choir. So my friend Stephanie was able to advance through the AP system and will graduate with a myriad of more honors than myself. But that is okay, because I have my witty charm to fall back on (winks cheesily) hahaha jk Music is fabulous! It helps blow off much need steam.

p.s. Are Johns Hopkins, Cornell, and UChicago really social killers?? I am quite passionate when it comes to academics.....but I would like to enjoy college (relationships, friendships, gallivanting through the town etc. etc.)

My stats:

4.32 GPA
4 yrs of spanish (yrs 2-4 are honors)
4 yrs of history, math, science, and english (with all AP and honors)
Member of National Spanish Honor Society and it's secretary
Member of Mu Alpha Theta
Member of NHS and it's historian
80 service hours
Member of science club
Golf 4 yrs (2 yrs varsity)
Basketball 4 yrs (2 yrs varsity)
SAT subject tests: chemistry, US history, spanish
SAT: 1230 (CR & Math) but 1820 total though (all 3 sections and essay).
AP: 3's or better on all tests
I have won several atheltic and academic awards

Do you think I would be accepted (if my essay goes well)? Can anyone give me some stats of people who have been accepted recently? Thank you!

Helvetica..
Hopkins does not have a social scene like UCLA or a comparible school. It is, however, located in "Collegetown", as more than eight colleges are withing 10 miles of eachother.

Many students are close with students of UMBC, Towson, Loyola, and even U'Balt. The fact that numerous Loyola students are members of JHU frats exhibits this.

theres also MICA, artpartiesss

Hi, Helvetica. I am a senior graduating from Hopkins, and as I have stated on a previous post, I am sooooo sad to be leaving. I had the most wonderful time, and made many wonderful friends. Don't listen to people who don't really know about the Hopkins social scene first-hand. It is really lots of fun. Just get active in whatever you enjoy. You will have a great time. I am sure that the same is true for Cornell. Many friends have had wonderful experiences.

Helvetica, I don't know much about U of Chicago's social scene, but I do know that their official motto is: "Where fun goes to die"...

Personally, that very fact would literally stop me from ever applying...

The University of Chicago has a really unique culture (from what I can tell from books/mail they send me), and people either love it or hate it. I recommend signing up for their mailing list. They send the best postcards/booklets ever, which are very revealing about the campus culture/city life. :)

Thanks to all for such wonderful feedback. I feel a little cliche applying to Hopkins because I want to someday be a physician (currently a gastroenterologist lol) I know I will have to work hard, but I think I can do it. I LOVE UChicago's postcards and booklets. They are colorful and very good at catching one's eye! I have a friend that goes to Vanderbilt.....but I just don't think I would fit that scene very well. I know there are like a billion microcosms inside each university that allow each student to find his/her niche; however, I feel there is a predominant stereotype of Southern aristocracy that kind of disgusts me. Right now I would say my favorites are Dartmouth and Hopkins......I need to bump my 30 to a 32 on the ACT by the end of the year.....for sure!! I do have nightmares that I am the applicant that slips through the cracks and ends up not being near intelligent enough for the school. I hope that is a prodigious fear for many other high schoolers! haha

p.s. What's the word on WUSTL?? I have read fabulous things, but I didn't know if anyone had any firsthand knowledge....

I love that there are so many musicians here!

I figured I would be chancing like crazy during senior year, so why not prep something for now? I'd like some feedbacks =)

Any more out there? :)
Let's open this up to questions for each other too.
(I'm pretty set on this thread continuing to be fantastic.)

Kidwithshirt- Looks like good chances. You seem to know what you're interested which is a great thing! If you can raise the SAT Writing Score (which you definitely can) to above a 700, your chances will greatly improve. From what I can tell now, you have just as much a chance as all the other well-qualified applicants. Good Luck! =]

Fellas, lets calm down with the stat posting. The college process is generally more about your connections, of which I have plenty :o Just let the process work itself out. It's been working since the 1700s.

kidwithshirt - Your stats are great, and it looks like you should be a strong candidate for all the schools you said you're interested in. The only thing I can't be sure about is Berkeley...apparently UC applications are through the roof (Cal got 86000 applications this year and was expecting no more than 55000, eeek!) So who knows by next year... I'm looking at Berkeley too, and it's been worrying me a bit.

jgh3115 - Wow, that's great you have so many connections. I hope you have decent stats too, though; you can't just expect to get in on connections, top-tier universities will laugh you out of the admissions office.

No offense.

Hey Juniors! Finally it's time for us to start the college process without everyone thinking we're weirdly early haha I'm actually excited.

What is everyone's school doing- like do you have guidance meetings about colleges, college fairs, etc?

And besides CC, what other websites do you use for researching schools? I like princeton-review.com and uni-go.com (but without the dashes, CC doesn't let you post websites)

I want to bring this thread back.
Juniors/Sophomores: where are you looking? Any college visits or impressions of schools? How far along are you in the search process?

I'm planning on flying out to the Midwest over spring break and doing my first college visits, yay! I think we're doing 5 schools in 6 days, so it's going to be busy but I'm making sure to bring notebooks and my camera and will try my best to keep it all organized. Hopefully this will help me narrow down my list of about 25 to no more than 12 or 13, ultimately.

Top universities/ universities I'm about 100% sure I'm applying to:
1. Michigan State University
2. University of Michigan- Ann Arbor
Other Universities with high interest ( few listed):
3. University of Wisconsin- Madison
Pennslyvania State University- University Park
University of Washington- Seattle
University of Minnesota- Twin Cities

i'm sad that i only just found this thread! it's awesome, lol. whoop whooop class of 2010!
