In this case, not a lot of them experienced either BCM campus. So, not an issue of comfort. It’s the brand. Most people don’t equate a newer campus to equal quality of the main campus. Baylor Scott & White is very well known in most places in Texas outside of the Houston metro. So, in our case, I’m speaking on my pocketbook’s behalf: low cost living at home vs. the cost of 20k or so living in Temple. If we are not local to the TMC, training where everyone in a x-mile radius have to come for treatment could be a plus. Student probably get to see rare cases more than if they’re where there are a lot of hospitals to choose from.
My own kid lives in Waco for 4 years. Even though he likes the Baylor campus, but there is not much else outside. The only thing he’ll miss about Waco will be the calmer traffic than traffic in a major metropolitan. Time to get back to his comfort zone lol
Before he received the MCAT results, I urged him to consider NYU if he got more than 522 (NYU average) to try his luck of their 3-year program that allows to be accepted to a residency in MS1 (since he’s so set on a specialty). Well, a 521 is a good score but is below NYU average and he’s an ORM. So, a 4-year path it will be.
In a way, it’s a relief. He doesn’t have to consider veering off a path he was planning on. No decision to be made makes life simpler now, but his grind will begin for the next race as soon as his starts med school. It seems like it never ends lol
There are 2 NYUs. NYU Long Island, the official 3 yr program (NYU Longone allows you to apply for it but not a given) is more forgiving on the MCAT score and 521 is good to score an interview.
NYU-NYC has a 3-year program that matches to a residency program at NYU if you choose to apply as a MS1. It will skip through the elective rotations to shave off one year but add a summer research project to the summer between MS1 and MS2. This campus has an average MCAT of 522.
Are they limited to primary care? My DS didn’t get interview despite scoring above that. One girl from Vandy got interview (with 523) but didn’t get admission. Anyway, he didn’t want to go NYC.
Mine would hesitate to live in NYC too, but if he got matched to the specialty that he loves (since HS) right out the gate as an MS1, it’d be worth it. No coulda, woulda would change the score, and 521 isn’t anything to spit at nor does it require a retake. It’ll be fine. The grind in med school is expected, but the grind to get a residency match is much more unpredictable. That’s my only concern. But, as a parent, I’m here to support, whatever he decides.
521 is a great score and no one retakes. For ORM boys retake may be worth if they got 517 or less. One of my son’s seniors retook 517 and got 523 and ended up at HMS.
What specialist is he think? You can DM if you don’t want to reveal here.
The matchlist this year shows they went to many different programs and also deviated from primary care. My D interviewed at Long Island and was on waitlist until the end and I told her back then that no one can be forced to stay in the program or stay with primary care which is what seems to be happening.
Does the Lagone campus have free tuition?
Since we got such a good deal for a med school pricewise, only places that have free tuition could beat Baylor pricing point. NYU NYC costs around 32-35k for fees, books, room & board, etc… Still more than Baylor, but the direct match is the thing that can justify the additional cost. I am cheap
Just got accepted into the Upstate Accelerated Scholars program through SUNY ESF! I would love to chat with any other scholars, particularly those who were admitted through Syracuse or ESF!
Both NYU Longone and Long Island are free. Long Island had only 24 seats in 2020. Not sure if they went up yet. They have guaranteed residencies for specific primary care and applicants interview for medicine, surgery, obgyn, etc, all primary care fields with restricted number in each area.
Why only Baylor? Most of the Texas medical schools offer the cheapest price point. Since only 10% of students OOS, they give a dummy $1000 scholarship which triggers in state tuition. Bottom line all 4 years I paid only around $22k per year tuition fees for 4 years of MD.
I heard not all TX schools offer that. Yours is a greart story, applied out of a good BSMD and got great tuition deal at better medical school . Those are the scenarios I try to show to BSMD applicants but you know what happens here.
