Thread for incoming UT CS students, Fall2015

I have a lot of questions so I thought it might be good to start a new discussion thread. Here’s one to start: I could place out of a number of early classes based on AP scores - mostly language/ soc studies, but also CS312 and probably 1st semester calculus. Maybe 1st semester physics too. But is that a good idea, or is it better to take the classes at UT and make sure I have a strong foundation? I’ll have had 2 yrs of HS CS (AP + a second yr) so I’m thinking I could skip CS312. But I’m taking AP Calc AB (not BC) so maybe I shouldn’t skip any first-yr calculus classes. Any advice?

Hi same here.
Although AP’s are not offered in my school, I self studied and gave Phy C both and CS. I had been doing C++ for the past year and studied Java in two weeks to get a 4!
I suggest you check out he syallabus for 312! It’s generally basic, so yea I feel you can skip it. (Even I’m skipping this).
I’m not aware of the difference b/w Calc AB and BC. I have to register for them now. Which one should I take?

Also are you set on UT?

I’m taking CS312 as a GPA boost haha, I could take the AP test and get credit, but the class will probably be easy.
The AP calc scores can help determine which math classes you can take. For example, if you get a 5 on the BC test you can take M427L which is an upper division math class. But if you don’t feel up to it, definitely take some refresher courses.
Place out of the language/soc studies classes though, that’s what I’m doing anyway. I’m hoping I can take some humanities classes for fun so the extra space will help.

@PCMguy‌

AP Calc AB is an introduction to differential and integral calculus with a few applications sprinkled here and there.

AP Calc BC is an extension of AB, which covers everything in AB plus sequences and series and a few more integration techniques/applications.

Take BC. The BC-specific material does not take very long to learn; hence, studying for BC won’t take much longer than studying for AB (personal experience, since I self studied BC while taking AB).

Im intending to skip math and phy requirement but not CS. Ive been doing cpp for 2 years but I wanna take the intro course and get the foundation established based on a UT perspective.

Thanks a lot. I’ll take BC then.
Also do you recommend taking any other AP’s which could help me gain credit in general?
I’m thinking of Chem and Calc BC, as you suggested.
