Thread for Subject Tests' "retake cutoff" lines!

I don't really know what to call the stuff.
But basically, this thread is for people to post what they think the lowest acceptable score for a certain subject test is.

I'll try to make consolidated list if we get enough!

So... what do you guys think the retake cutoff line is for math?
I got a 750... :/
And I've heard an 800 is already at like a 90th percentile, so 750 is high 70th to low 80th percentile or something...
Retake or no?

Reserved post for consolidated list:

I’m not really too experienced at this, but wouldn’t you be aiming for anything above average? I think the 50th percentile is about a 650, so anything above that I’d say is good?

I really don’t think it’s worth retaking when you’re 760+. At that point, the scores really aren’t that different, and retaking would only make you look like you’re obsessed with scores (dangerously obsessed).

That being said, I think MathII is the weird one out of the bunch, because most people get high 700’s. Still, I don’t think 770+ is worth retaking.

Hmm, yeah.
A lot of people want 800s on Math2 because an 800 on math, apparently, isn’t even that impressive anymore. I’ve heard that 800 on math2 is like, 90th percentile?
Which means anything less puts you under that… so…

@Azure, haha, yes, that’s what sane people should be doing
BUT, my parents put a lot of emphasis on education and tests and whatnot. Understandable, I guess. We’re not too rich. Just middle class. So I have to depend on academics to get me scholarships to pay for college… So… yeah. I have to test as best as I can, so I’m always striving for that REALLY above average score :p

what do you think should be the retake cutoff for chemistry? especially for a bs md applicant?

I got an 800 in bio and math 2 but a 750 in chem :/

I got an 800 in math 2 and Chem. What should I do about a 740 in USH?

@Ferredoxin, congrats on your scores! Those are all really good!

Hmm… My friend told me anything above 760 on chem would be good.
But honestly, I like to think that 750+ is good and instead of retaking the test, other things should be worked on. ECs and volunteering and whatnot.

Maybe this will help you decide?

@Sour, did you take the APUSH test? I would say if you did, and you got (or get) a 5, then don’t worry about retaking.

What about Literature. 700 because it’s harder?

@Mikey: I’m not rich either lol. I’m middle class too! But I worked so hard to study for everything, and my SAT’s are tied for the highest in my grade, but my SAT 2’s I don’t even know about! They pale in comparison to almost all of the other scores here, and that makes me sad :(. Tests are very annoying! But hopefully I can get a lot of scholarship money too.

It’s okay AzureStar - the scores on College Confidential are not representative of the general population at all, lol. And it’s very impressive if your SAT score is tied for the highest in your grade

How lame does a 700 in Literature sound? Especially when you’re trying to major in Literature? And I got a bloody 790 on the practice test…GRRR!!!

Haha, so we’re in the same boat!
Honestly, I don’t like how much emphasis is put on standardized tests nowadays. They don’t really show how well a kid can do in school… Just how well a kid can do on a test that takes one hour to finish.
I have a friend who is extremely smart because he’s a careful worker. He takes his time when taking tests and doing homework so he understands the material he’s learning better than everyone else.
But when it comes to standardized tests and the short time limits… uh oh…

@Lit takers:
http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/2010-sat-subject-test-percentile-ranks.pdf</a>
730 would keep you above the 90th percentile range, so I guess that would be the ideal cutoff score?
But from what I’ve heard, Lit is “SAT Critical Reading on steroids”
I’ve heard it’s the hardest test ever. Haha.
So… speaking for myself, I’d probably be pretty pumped with a 700+.

I got a 700 in lit as well as a prospective English major (with 790 Math II and 800 USH). I will probably send it. They probably recognize that it’s a difficult test and they don’t expect perfection anyway.

Percentiles aren’t absolute with subject tests because they vary in self-selectivity.

And it is basically critical reading on steroids. Less time per question, harder questions, and no vocab to cushion. >.> /excuses

Mikeypz: you do realise that you can’t edit posts 20 minutes after they’ve been posted, no?

@082349, Oh, poop!
Haha. Guess I learned something new today…
Thanks :p

By the way, to Lit takers, is the test anything like the AP English Language exam?
Anything at all?

I guess the multiple choice are somewhat similar. You’re looking for devices in the same sort of way. There are poems on SAT Lit, also. I found the AP test to be easier than the June SAT test, though. SAT test seems to be more rushed.

I went into the Lit test completely oblivious of what would be on it (and my score reflects that, 660). I had no idea that it would ask about specific literary and poetic devices. Unless you are innately talented in CR or have done plenty of preparation, I would not suggest taking it. At least I have no intentions of entering the humanities, and have two other decent scores to use.

I got an 800 in CR on the SAT, so what’s the least I could score on Lit without studying? Also, 700 on Bio M and I intend to major in International Relations. Re-take?
