Three questions regarding the Californian CPA

Is it true what I've heard that California is going to increase the CPA requirements to 150 units of education from 120?

If this is so, and I am currently a Junior, I will surely need 150 units. So I can either double major in accounting and finance to get the 150. OR major in accounting, and then get my MBA in finance later on to meet this 150 units of education requirement... what would you recommend if I would like to eventually become a CFO/Director of Finance/Accounting

Lastly, am I able to take and pass the CPA exam even though I have say 130 units of education? I would have the 24 accounting and 24 business classes. I'm wondering if i am able to pass the CPA exam while it is still fresh in my head, and then activate it by entering an MBA program after a few years work experience and obtaining my remaining education unit requirement.

Thanks very much for reading, feel free to answer one or all of the answers, any feedback is much appreciated!

Yes. Effective 1/1/2014. Also, there is new requirement of 30 additional units related to accounting and ethics coursework in addition to the current 24 accounting and 24 business. Although what kind of courses meet that requirement is not finalized yet.

Since the additional coursework is not finalized yet. It’s hard to say the finance course you double major in would meet that requirement. Your best bet is take as much as available accounting course from your school.

Yes. 150 units and extra course work are license requirement. You can still sit for the exam as long as you have a bachelor degree.

Talk to your advisor and accounting dept to see how your school’s program responses to this change and what you should do to prepare for it.
