Hi,

I'm currently a freshman and my course load is a joke, requiring only maybe 2 hours of nonstop homework a night. However, I find myself staying up very late, about 12ish, and sometimes even later unnecessarily, because of distractions like Facebook. I'm worried that as I progress throughout high school and start taking AP classes that I'll begin to struggle due to poor time management. For the older students who found themselves in my situation as a freshman, do you naturally get better with time management as your course load increases, or did you have to work at it? Any suggestions on how I can be more efficient?

For me, I’ve always had the same time management skills but as I progressed through high school I started pushing myself to finish assignments earlier. Also, 2 hours of nonstop homework sounds like a lot to me. The longest I’ve spent on homework in the last 3 years of high school is probably 2 hours on a project I procrastinated on. I don’t know what classes you’re taking but I think you should maybe try to do it more efficiently.

2 hours of nonstop homework is more than I had, and I took 5 AP classes (6 if you count the econs as separate classes). Granted, I’m not one to do any additional studying if I feel confident about a test

Cal Newport, an author, has excellent time management suggestions in 2 or more books.

^ I second the Cal Newport suggestion.
