time to kill myself

NYU can see your passions and interests on your club listings. and again NYU CANT see how well you express yourself. Despite the rumors, Admission officers aren't idiots and know 95% of you had your AP english teacher correct it 20 times. As I said before, a horrible essay can hurt, and an amazing essay that explains some fault can help, but a vast majority bear nominal consequences.

but believe what you want to believe, I've only gone to college here for 2 years...

during the summer, me and my friends encountered upon this guy who worked for nyu admissions. he was telling us that the essay is important and giving us funny ideas to talk about. but maybe he was lying.. nobody knows.

umm...I wrote my essays entirely by myself. The only person who ever saw any of my essays was me....so i'm pretty sure there's a good chance that many other students do the same....

I do not care what BS we get from mattstottle. The essays are important and most seniors, including myself, treat them as important. NO way would I believe that 97% DON'T COUNT. I also believe that your ability to pay all expenses without aid or grants--would be viewed favorably. I don't know much about GSP but I would not go by mattstottle, in any event, w/o a second viewpoint. I feel lucky to be part of NYU 2007( ED CAS ). I wish every one a fat envelope.

Thanks for your well wishes... I hope to receive a fat envelope on the first... Also I do concur with your perspective about the financial aid thing... They say it's need blind but I do believe that they would give someone who can fully pay preference over one who would take some of the university's funds through aid.

IT IS EXPLICITLY AGAINST UNIVERSITY POLICY TO DISCRIMINATE BASED ON NEED,AND AGAINST THE LAW.

They have a certain amount of predetermined aid packages they will give them out. and then they give them out to people depending on merit and need. You just won't get good aid if you are accepted but have below average stats, but you will still get in. jesus christ people need to stop talking out of their @$$es on this forum and polluting the minds applicants. If you need aid CHECK THE BOX, don't lose out on 1000's of dollars because someone a board tells you it will help you get in.

My AP English teacher only read our essays once, and gave most of us B/C/Ds. She said they were generally so poor that she "didn't want to waste her precious time" and refused to read them again :(

College essays getting GRADED AND CORRECTED BY TEACHERS, i hate using anecdotal evidence to prove my point, but this is exactly what goes on everywhere, and why colleges don't put too much emphasis on it. I mean write a good essay of course, but don't go out spending $100's on a writing tutor and buying sample essay books.

That's a lie. I definitely need financial aid and I got into GSP. It's probably because I only got 1310 on my SATS, but oh well.

Actually, colleges can tell if you didn't write your essay... if it is outstanding and your SAT essay scores are terrible, they will know.

wow mattistotle, I think what you said is a bit harsh. I definitely agree with the majority of students here in thinking that NYU/other colleges care A LOT about essays. why the **** would they ask us to write it then and spend their time reading it??? Essays show an aspect about a student that is not evident in any other part of an application.... yes, some students hire teachers and tutors to write their essays for them, but I bet you anything the admissions officers can tell just by comparing the quality of the essay to the students grades/SAT scores. You shouldn't spread such nonsense around cause you obviously dont know what you are talking about

Do they really do that? I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

dude whatever, "mattistotle" is not on the effing admissions board so what the heck could he possibly know? his word is worth absolutely nothing.

He is a fountain of Mis-information. If it were written down, mattstotle's opinion would not be worth the paper it was written on. Enough said!!!

hey i doubted myself A LOT and came back with a CAS ED acceptance...stuff happens. Luck plays a small part in college admission, no matter how much people disagree.

mattistotle is extremely helpful and all of you need to backoff. He is being extremely nice by taking the time out and giving his opinion. If you don''t like what he has to stay move on.

Re essays: I am not really familiar with most NYU schools, but I am pretty sure that for Gallatin the essay detailing why you want the individualized study program and what you want to do with it is pretty important. I would think that at the very least, the ad com would need to make sure that the student proposed course of study was consistent with the sort of thing that Gallatin can provide -- and also not something that merely duplicated an existing CAS major.

My guess is that the importance of essays varies at each school, and also can be more or less important depending on individual circumstances. For example, I think that at Tisch for dance or musical theater the most important thing would be the performance at the audition. The world's best essay won't help a kid who can't sing get into MT.

So I think it would be more fair to say "it depends". It depends on the school and it depends on the applicant.

I don't think mistletoe is at all helpful. If he doesn't like NYU maybe he should move on. I discount everything he says as coming from a bitter person-- who just needs to get a life. Of course the essays count. He can clearly keep both his time and his warped opinion.

"mattistotle is extremely helpful and all of you need to backoff. He is being extremely nice by taking the time out and giving his opinion. If you don''t like what he has to stay move on."

My name is firewalker and I approve this message. You guys really need to grow a spine.

ellock you don't even go to the school yet, please stop talking out of your ***. If you bothered to read what I said in other threads, I said I personally like NYU, but a lot of people do not. I gave an honest reason from the dream school vs school rank parity. I have friends who work in the admissions office, and I have already went through admissions and 2 years of school here, so I think I know a little bit more about the school than you do.

It's people like you that make NYU suck for so many people....people that are really vocal about things they know nothing a bout, and extremely rude to people they do not know.

Look at some of the stupid fights you see going on in this board every day, over things as small as grammar. This is just a precursor of just about every non-lecture class you will ever take, and the average kind of casual conversation you will have to deal with with alot of people here.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of cool fun people here, but there are alot of stuck up pretentious people, so be prepared.
