Timing of adding extra schools to FAFSA

Now I'm really confused...

We submitted FAFSA for the max 6 schools. I waited to get my SARs by email. Then I waited an extra couple of days. Then I went in, deleted 3 schools and added 3 more.

Then I heard a rumor on the Financial Aid forum that this might not work.

I called FAFSA and they were clueless. (Apparently I am the ONLY person to have ever needed to send a FAFSA to 9 schools!)

So, I called the 3 schools I had deleted. One of them said they hadn't received any FAFSAs yet. One didn't have my son's. And one said they wouldn't have access to that information until early Feb.

What I'm wondering is, are there any parents out there who have had success with this procedure? Do you think the three deleted schools will ever get our FAFSA?

THANKS

^same...also wondering. I might call the Financial Aid office at my alma mater (which was one of the 1st six) to see if they can tell me...

Weenie, if you have SARS from the first set you are fine. I would have done it slightly differently from you -- my practice was to delete ALL the schools from the first set, so that set A has an entirely different set than set B -- this is because the 3 schools that are on both sets are now going to get two SARs rather than one. For me, it is easier to have completely different sets, especially as I knew I would have to update them both when my taxes were done.

You will see from the FAFSA set that every set you have done is retained -- so you will be able to go back in during March after creating set D and still be able to see & pull up sets A & B if there is a need. When colleges download SARs they will automatically get the LATEST one that lists them -- it doesn't matter when they do that.

If for any reason a college doesn't receive a SAR, you will always be able to pull one up from the FAFSA site & print & fax if the college will accept it that way from you.

weenie, I went through this last year, and wasted hours on the phone. I called for fafsa help, and everytime I called I got different advice. I then called the first 6 schools. Some of the schools do not download/upload the info until March (2 of those schools did assure me that they look at the date in which it was filed and they look at the fafsa in order, so those filed 1/1 have their fafsa looked at first). I ended up putting in the additional schools a few days after getting the SAR. It all worked out fine, and all of the schools did get the fafsa information. Weenie, is it possible that they do not have the information b/c they do not download the information for a couple of months? This was the case at several schools that I contacted last year. Some did download 2 weeks after I submitted, and were able to tell me in mid-January that they had the info. There has to be an easier way. Why don't they just have 15blank spaces rather than 6?

Thanks everyone.

calmom - I hadn't thought about the fact that now I sent two FAFSAs to some of these schools. Great...

I just got an email from one of the schools that was interesting.

"We will not be able to begin loading 2007-8 FAFSAs until the end of
February in all likelihood. We do not receive our annual software
upgrades until mid-February."

Hmmm. Makes ya' wonder why we rush to get these in Jan 1 !!!!

Now I wish I had just done the top-choice 6 schools and waited for the 3 others for our taxes to be done...

Anyway, I think I'm just going to FORGET about it for a month or so.

No, you were right to go ahead with the 3 others -- I would have done one FAFSA with 6 schools and the other with 3, but that's just my preference because then down the line it is really clear which school has which FAFSA, if there are any other differences between them. The schools will just look at whatever one is the most recent.

The problem with waiting is that with everything else going on during the college application season, it's pretty easy to let something slip -- and aid is often prioritized to those who get in the apps early on, especially at safety-type schools which tend not to be the schools that promise to meet the full need of all applicants. So you are better off knowing that you have essentially started the financial aid process at ALL schools by filing early.

My son applied to many different schools so we faced the same problem as you did for FAFSA . Since I hate doing anything online when I don't know exactly what I'm doing, I called FAFSA and this is what they recommended and what I did.

After you fill out your first FAFSA with 6 schools you will receive an email confirmation. Go to the FAFSA website and look at your SAR, check that is accurate and write down your DRN #. Call up FAFSA, give them your child's information and DRN# and provide them with the additional schools' FAFSA #s. Eventually you will receive an email confirmation for the new set of schools and you can repeat the process.

Just to add a nod of agreement about the 6 school blanks. We couldn't have handled the confusion described here of deleting and then re-entering. We were actually told to mail the extra three by snail mail with paper applications. We had to decide which schools to do that with, since they would know we didn't put them down first with the online process. The process was such a pain (unable to retrieve your pin number more than twice caused trouble) and my husband winced throughout the whole experience. Then the feedback was truly laughable.
