Timing of taking SAT - help!

I’m getting confused here. DS is a sophomore taking Algebra II with Trig. He’s already taken Geometry.

Should he take the SAT in June 2019 when he is almost done with the course and it’s fresh? Or should he spend the summer prepping and take it in August, right when Junior year is starting…or October, which would be about 2 weeks before the PSAT?

And since we’re not sure which is his better test, when should he take the ACT?

If anyone has a good timeline to recommend, I’d appreciate it!

My kids prepped for the PSAT and SAT in the summer going into junior year. They both took the SAT in October, a few weeks before the PSAT. Then they took the ACT in February junior year (they prepared for it over Christmas break). That left time for a retake of one of those if necessary.

My kids took those tests starting winter or early spring junior year. An extra six months can give a boost in vocabulary and analysis skills for the reading portions. I’d wait. But then you still have time to prep/retest if he isn’t happy.

My kids did also take one shot at the ACT with no prep (but I think there is a lot of overlap with SAT prep, too). Both had slightly better SATs, so just sent those.

yes, i would definitely recommend only taking sat/sat after getting familiar with alg ii concepts.
for instance, on the December 8th ACT I got lucky on one of the last questions because it was about a topic that we had JUST learned in Alg. II a week ago, so I knew the answer almost instantly.
