My son is a potential soccer recruit and the coach at a school he’s very interested in invited him to campus, to meet with him, meet the team, have lunch and watch a game.
So the question: what should he wear? He goes to a school with a dress code so is either in khaki shorts and polo, or athletic shorts or warm up pants normally.
(Thank you – I do feel a little silly posting such a kind of trivial question . . .)
The khakis and polo are fine , but not a polo with another college crest on it!
While I cannot suggest what to wear, I do suggest that he not wear his soccer uniform.
Well, he is on the visit and I’m killing time in a coffee shop. What he ended up wearing: a button down shirt (lavender, the school’s color is purple), khakis and dress shoes.
For others who might be reading later his buddy who is being recruited to top D1 programs told my son he wears a jacket and tie, in addition to what my son wore.
On an official visit, I’d probably suggest more dressed up, but you said your son was going to a game. That to me is more casual, especially if it is HOT.
It wasn’t an official visit as my son is a junior. On the other hand it was d3. It was a full day of meet the coach, tour the athletic facilities, eat with the team, have an admissions tour, attend the pregame meeting, watch the game and be debriefed by the assistant coach, with 8 or 9 other potential recruits. It’s the only school that’s offered something like this.
D3 daughter wore leggings or gym shorts + t-shirts on every visit, as did the majority of recruits we saw. It drove me nuts but didn’t hurt her recruiting at all.
I would say dress for the weather. I remind my D to avoid badly ripped jeans or shorts. But a hoodie should be fine if it’s cool/rainy and you’ll be outdoors. Answer is totally different if you are actually interviewing.
My D20 looked at schools and met with coaches last winter in the bitter cold so she wore boots with nice cords or tights and a skirt (also with boots). For her OVs recently, she wore jeans/yoga pants etc and was right at home with all of the others. For just general tours without a specific meeting, I just asked that she not wear ripped jeans.
I tried but in the end she was so nervous I decided it was better that she feels comfortable than look presentable. She looked like an athlete, but one that was getting ready to go work.
I agree comfort is most important. Most kids I know wore their normal everyday clothes. Jeans, khakis, shorts, leggings, hooded sweatshirt, polo, Oxford shirt. Whatever they were comfortable in and used to wearing. That’s for Ivies, P5, selective LACs.
I had the same concern with my daughter two years ago. She wore what she was comfortable in - t-shirts, athletic shorts and Birkenstocks. I paid close attention to what others wore at each school - as it helped in determining where she would fit. I’d agree - no impact on recruiting at selective D3s and she ended up at her top choice with offers to play at several others.
S always did khaki & polo or button down shirt. Sometimes he was overdressed a bit, but we both were more comfortable being overdressed than under.
My son usually dressed up a little and was usually overdressed. I agree that’s better than being under!
