Tips? anything plz?

So I got accepted from the Waitlist for Emory University. YAH!

And then reality hit, I would have to pay practically most of the tuition price.

Basically admission is around 47k, and I received "Total Aid Offer" of 8500, 3500 of which are Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.

It might be that I was on the waitlist I will have to pay most of the cost, so I'm not receiving much. My family EFC is like 42k.

Yea, I know my parents make money but they also have their daily expenses.

I'm going in tomorrow for a personal meeting with my financial aid guy hopefully to have the cost reduced about 5-7000, because then I can hopefully make ends meet through summer jobs/loans/whatever.

Any tips for the process? I will be leaving around noon, so any help will be great.

Edit: is the amount I'm asking for even reasonable? I'm first child to go to college in my family, so I will be new to this.

Who knows, maybe lots of merit aid students turned them down and they still have some $$$. But with an EFC of $47K, they're not going to increase need based aid.

I'm sorry, I didn't clarify, I'm not receiving a dime from Emory, from GA Hope and other 1000 dollar grant.

Is 4-5000 even reasonable amount to ask?

I have a couple of points to make, hopefully they'll be good enough.

I'm confused, are you asking for merit or need based aid? What are your points?

is your 42K EFC based on FAFSA or Profile? Unless you have some major special circumstances (like unusual medical costs not covered by insurance -- or a disabled grandparent that your family supports) it is unlikely that you will qualify for any additional need-based aid.

I would also guess that most merit-based aid was already awarded -- it is usually used to attract the top students they are trying to draw to Emory and if you were waitlisted -- you weren't their top pick.

I hate to be so harsh -- but I would not have any high expectations.

Please let us know how it turns out
