Tips on how to improve math and writing scores?

Hello!

I just got my score back yesterday. It is VERY low compared to most of you. I have no Ivy aspirations, I just want to go to a well ranked Christian college.

700 CR, 590 M, 590 W.

I have heard that the CR is the hardest to bring up, yet my CR score has gone up 120 points just by answering more questions/studying a few vocab words/taking a few practice tests.

However, my poor W score is stagnate… and I have studied for it. And I have taken college classes and I receive 90’s - 100’s on most of my writing assignments. Any tips?

I’m just bad at math… any advice? I only answer about 38-39 questions, but I get them all right except for maybe one.

Do you think I can get into Wheaton (Ill) and Pepperdine potentially with this score?

Thanks!

Congrats on your high reading score! I practiced so much for reading and my highest was a 600, though I got 800s on math and writing :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, for writing, which part lowers your score? The multiple choice or essay? If its the multiple choice, you should just practice more. Do test corrections for each incorrect answer. Is there a pattern? Do you get a lot of the same types of questions (like SVD, parallel structure, etc) wrong? If so, practice those specifically. And remember that there are sentences that sound correct orally but are technically grammatically incorrect. If your essay lowers your score, I guess you should practice more. Have around 4 examples handy so that you could just easily choose 2 to write. I know people who waste time trying to think of 2 solid examples during the test, so just memorize 4 examples and write about any 2 that fit the prompt.

For math, is time your main struggle? You could use your calculator to quickly find stuff like min/max.

Good luck!

Thanks @misschoding ! That is SO awesome that you did so great on math and writing! And a 600 on CR is still quite good… I think it is in the 83%?

I think it is both, haha. I get a constant 8 on the essay no matter how much I try… for the MC I usually miss about 10 every time and omit 2. I need to check my score report on Dec 1 to see what types I am missing.

For math… I just am bad at it! I shouldn’t say that, but it is sort of true. Time plays a big part though. I only answer about 12-16 on each section. I only want a 630 - 640 on it… I will try to use the calculator more though!

Thank you!

The best way in my opinion to do well on math consistently is too always guarantee some good amount of time left to check your work. The math section is 25 or 20 min at times, so I worked on completing a section in 15 or 10 min. I practiced using these time limits for many practices. I also learned how to do competition math (like AMC’s and MATHCOUNTS) effectively. In combination of managing my time and figuring out how to solve a problem really fast, I always had 10 min or more to check my work.

Also learn how to do math section without using the calculator. I realized that the calculator can sometimes be a burden if you rely on it too much. Basically finish section fast without calculator. Then go back check answers with calculator. Then go back and reread each question word by word to make sure nothing was missed.

@HighSchoolerDana haha thank you!

Okay, so for the essay, I always made sure to fill up the two pages but I didnt purposely make my handwriting any bigger. In my body paragraphs, I connected my topic sentences to my thesis. For example, if the essay prompt were about courage and I want to use Character A from a novel as an example to support my thesis, I would talk about the brave things Character A did but talk more about how those actions support my thesis of courage. I did that for all 4 times I took the test and got 10s all 4 times. Okay, check on Dec 1 to see what kinds of questions you get wrong. But also when youre doing practice tests try to see which ones they are.

Yeah, I guess people have different tips. For me, using the calculator helped me because Im used to the calculator and I can punch in numbers pretty quickly. Though if you arent as fast, I dont know if my advice would benefit you. If time plays a big part, then I think you should just practice more. Sorry, Im not sure how to help you for math only because I like math.

@misschoding and @daman12356 Thank you guys so much!
