<p>interesting read. moral of the story: uniqueness is key</p>

<p>Not to be quarrelsome, but I read that article in my Alumni News magazine, and came away with the opposite impression. Good writing seems to be the key, not topic uniqueness. The point I thought she was making was that even very common essays, like those on cloning or religion, had the same acceptance rate as any other. Essays on common topics are not the "kiss of death".</p>

<p>Tha Nabokov essays were unusual, and had a high acceptance rate, but she attributed that to better writing skill (note the SAT comparison) rather than topic choice.</p>
