An issue with generalized statements such as this is that they can be disproven with one example that contradicts the statement. I’m not going to provide any specific examples, but you can be rest assured that someone got a job specifically because they went to UA over another, presumed to be “lesser,” school. There’s probably somebody somewhere who got a job because they went to UA rather than UVA.

A lot of “less prestigious” schools are actually very prestigious in certain circles. For example, ask a long time judge about the University of Nevada-Reno and chances are that they’ll know it as the home of the National Judicial College, which is a very highly respected institution in their field.

One of the things I try to emphasize on CC is the importance of “fit.” No matter how high a school might be ranked, it will not be a good fit for every student, even if the students meet or exceed admissions criteria. UA is a better choice than UVA, UT-Austin, even Harvard or Yale for some students, including many top students.

We can go in circles for days on end. I’ll end my participation in this thread with a proverb that I feel sums up the advice for responding to “the look”.

“He who knows not and knows not he knows not: he is a fool - shun him. He who knows not and knows he knows not: he is simple - teach him. He who knows and knows not he knows: he is asleep - wake him. He who knows and knows he knows: he is wise - follow him.”

This thread makes me laugh. Being from NJ 99% of the people who have never been here are so ignorant of what NJ looks like. They normally have only flown into Newark airport (not a lovely site :() or have driven through the state on the turnpike which again does not bring you through the most pleasant landscape. Because they mostly have driven through it we often get asked when we tell people we are from NJ “what exit”. When I hear that I just cringe as I live in a beautiful rural area in Northwest NJ near the PA border next to the Pocono mountains. I have traveled all over the place so I know not to stereotype areas and after visiting Bama with my son last year he and I know that he going to a very special place where the people are friendly and the atmosphere is amazing!!! I’m so excited for him

UA has made a very concentrated effort to attract merit scholars in the past few years by giving VERY attractive scholarships to high achieving students. And Auburn has also.
UF is backing off on this–why? they did it for many years already and has such an application base now that it’s no longer warranted.
UA will be a great college experience! Good luck to him!

Don’t forget the racial scandal at Duke. ;)
Karen has already let them know how she feels about that. Check it out. True colors always seem to come out.

And also the numerous sexual assault/harassment issues at “elite” Amherst and the murder of the student at “prestigious” UVA by her laxbro boyfriend…

Yes, it’s always good to know that UA is in good company when it comes to scandals, as this just proves that it is a top school, too, and can dish out bad behavior with the rest of 'em. Roll Tide!! Thanks to all for posting these links.
