I was wondering if it's possible to pursue a double major at NYU, one of which being drama at Tisch and the other being another subject (for example, psychology/music/english) not at Tisch. Is this possible to do while working towards a BFA in theater/drama, or only a BA? Thanks!

Yes, it is possible, though challenging, to do a double major when enrolled in the BFA Drama at Tisch with a BA major in Arts and Sciences. It is a little easier to combine the BFA with a Minor, which is also possible. But double majors are possible at Tisch with the BFA, and are not typically possible at many other BFA programs.

My daughter may double major at NYU - she’ll be attending Tisch in the fall. It definitely helps to have a lot of AP credits.

however, based on your “does it exist” post, I don’t think Tisch Drama is for you! Did you know that you have to take seven semesters of theater studies? This is primarily analysis and history, which you don’t seem to want at all.

If you go to this page, and click on the Theatre Studies download on the right, you’ll get a sense of what this requirement is about.

Thank you everyone! If I did choose to double major with a BFA, how many ‘free’ classes, if any, would I have to explore other topics of interest that aren’t my major?
Also, if I choose to just pursue a BFA in theater, would I have room to take other class not pertaining to theater, or would I only be acting 24/7?

A little perhaps, but not a lot. You would still have to satisfy the general education distribution requirements but after that, between the BFA (which is much more than a BA type major in terms of credits) and the second major (BA major), it would use up the majority (but not all) of your credits). Coming in with some AP credits might help though. But the general education requirements will involve some coursework that is in neither of your majors.

For sure. First, you will be required to take seven Theater Studies classes (these are academic in nature and not the same as studio training). You will be required to take 8 general education classes in certain broad areas (2 of the 8 are required freshmen writing courses specifically for Tisch students). Then, there are elective credits. So, there are a fair amount of academic classes not pertaining to theater, though not as much as you would have in a BA degree. But it is definitely not acting 24/7! You train in the studio all day three days per week and take academics two days per week.

Here is some information on the academic curriculum for BFA Drama students at Tisch (in other words, the NON studio (acting, etc.) curriculum that you’d be immersed in two days per week):

One of the issues with double majoring, is finding classes that meet on the two days that you would not be in studio. You need either Mon / Wed classes or Tues/ Thursday classes depending on which year you are (freshman studio days are different than upper class, but they all meet on Fridays, IIRC).
