My S received notification yesterday that he is admitted to Tisch as a Cinema Studies major. He is applying to SCA as a Critical Studies major. The supplemental apps were similiar, one long paper and a few shorter ones. His stats are ok but not great by any means. Do you think this means he has a good shot at USC or is the selection at the two schools different enough that it does not matter at all? We live on the east coast so NYU has some advantages logistically but he/we really loved the USC more traditional campus life.

My son went to USC for CS. We were east coast people at the time, Virginia. He did not apply to NYU.

It is my understanding that USC encourages more cross program involvement than NYU. CS students are required to take courses in production and screenwriting. It is my understanding that NYU is more walled off. Your son should check on that.

USC offers a more traditional college environment. Is that important to your son?

My son is been out of USC now for a year and a half. He is still in LA. His best friends remain those he had at USC including some he made on the film floor his first year.

I applied to Tisch for Dramatic Writing, USC for Screenwriting and was accepted to both. A lot of my classmates had the same thing happen (I think at least four of the 25 enrolled with me turned down NYU), so from my end I'd say the admits are pretty compareable, although at least one person got into USC but not NYU and vice versa. I don't know if that's very helpful...:)
