Tisch Hopeful

Hi! I'm Nell and NYU is my dream school, specifically Tisch for acting, and I want to apply early decision next fall. My grades and scores are pretty good, but they aren't spectacular. I know that when I went on a campus visit there, our tour guide said that for Tisch applicants, their audition is considered just as much as their transcript and scores, so grades and scores are only about 50% of the decision. I figured this would mean that Tisch students are accepted with a little more leniency, grade wise. Is this true? For example, Naviance tells me that the average NYU student's GPA is a 3.83. I have a 3.69, but I figured that my slightly below average GPA paired with a killer audition would allow me an equal chance. Am I correct in thinking this? Any current Tisch student's advice would be awesome!

well, it’s true that the audition counts as much as the academic profile – but that also means that the academic profile is weighted as much as the audition. So, a great audition cannot outweigh weak academics. I believe that academically you will be compared vis a vis other Tisch students, but don’t assume that is not a competitive pool. Many students turn down schools – including Ivies – that are more selective than NYU for the chance to attend Tisch. So, if you pass both reviews (academic and artistic), I believe the next step is that the admissions committee decides who to admit from those who passed both reviews.

Also, your SATs should be in the ballpark for NYU. And, if the Naviance for your school tells you that no one with your stats ever gets in to NYU, that would be a sign that you have an uphill battle. If it’s more of a mixed record, then by all means feel good, as it means you have a shot!

You are better off using Naviance as your barometer than any GPA someone on this forum will give you, because the colleges look at your record in the context of your high school, and recognize that GPAs are computed differently at schools and expectations vary: an A at one school might only be a B at another.

good luck to you! My D LOVES Tisch Drama!!

Cool, thank you for the advice!
