Tisch Photo vs. Steinhardt or CAS

Hey everyone, I have a question..
I would love to get in to the Tisch Photography program at NYU and I know it's really competitive. I'm somewhat reluctant to apply for it because I've heard it's so small.
The other programs I was looking at are Media, Culture and Communications in Steinhardt or Environmental Studies/International Relations in Collge of Arts and Sciences. I'd almost rather apply to an easier program and get accepted, and still go to NYU, rather than blow my chances by applying to Tisch; however, that being said, I love photography, so I'm torn.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Hi! I’m in MCC in Steinhardt.

The Steinhardt photography program falls within the Studio Art major. You could actually apply to MCC and minor in Studio Art. I’m in Intro to Digital Photography, and my professor said that the main difference between Tisch and Steinhardt is that Tisch is more “career oriented” while Steinhardt is all about “art for art’s sake”.

Steinhardt MCC gives you 16 credits of “unrestricted” classes, which means you could take photography and graduate with an MCC degree.

It’s much easier to get into Steinhardt. Steinhardt is pretty liberal with double majoring/minoring, at least MCC is.

International Relations is an Honors major only available to Politics students. [NYU > Politics > International Relations Undergraduate Program](http://politics.as.nyu.edu/page/internationalrelations)

If you really like media, I would suggest applying to MCC and then minoring or using your unrestricted credits to take all the photography classes you want.

Tisch even has “Open Arts” classes available to NON-Tisch students, and they offer photography very frequently. I’m taking a screenwriting class next semester in Tisch, actually. You could very well take a Tisch photography class while studying in Steinhardt.

Just a few options for you, hope this wasn’t terribly overwhelming!

That actually helped a lot, thank you!
This is somewhat related, do you know where I could find acceptances rates for each individual college? Or how hard it is to get into certain programs? Like I have heard Tisch is hard but I’m curious about how hard, that’s all. I’m definitely leaning toward Steinhardt but I like the “career oriented” aspect that you mentioned about Tisch.

They don’t really release those numbers, to my knowledge. Generally, people say that the order goes, from least selective to most:

SCPS, Steinhardt (non audition/portfolio majors)/Nursing, Gallatin, CAS, Tisch and Stern.

Obviously, within Tisch and Steinhardt, the majors all have varying levels of difficulty in terms of being accepted. Especially because certain majors within Tisch and Steinhardt require you to audition or submit a portfolio. Stern is the most difficult only because the level of competition is so high amongst the students competing for spots.
