Tisch Versus CAS

I'm a first year who's trying to transfer to NYU next year, and I was wondering if there was any way I could apply to both CAS and tisch. I really want to go into tisch film/tv, but I'm scared ****less I wont get in because I heard it's way more difficult. However, if I don't get into tisch I would like to just go to college of arts and sciences anyway (assuming I have more of a chance getting in there). Is there a way to apply to both?! Advice would be great!!

you cant apply to both, sorry! =( if you want to attend tisch, you really need to apply straight to there, even though its really hard to get into. really, all the schools are hard to get into, its just that tisch takes more into account than grades/sats/ecs/essays. you also have to have a really good portfolio.

i applied to tisch this year for film/tv (still waiting to see) and i kind of thought about the same thing, but what i boiled it all down to is that if my portfolio isnt good enough to get me into tisch, than i shouldnt be going there, even though i really really want to. ill just work harder and (hopefully) get in next year if i get rejected. and i basically told admissions that in one of my short essays (they ask why we applied to the school we did, and i said bc i wanted to prove to them i belong there).

now, if you arent sure that film is the thing for you (bc no offense, but if you say youd just like to go to cas anyway it doesnt really seem like you have much passion for it), then maybe you should apply to cas. it all depends on what you intend on following.

what are you majoring in now? what school are you attending?

I'm actually applying from Barnard College. The reason that I want to apply to both is that although I have an intense passion for film I need to get away from my current college as well. So even if I didn't get into tisch, I would still want to get away from barnard, even if it meant settling for CAS.

scrapnel is right. NYU does not allow applicants, either freshman or transfer, to apply to more than one of its colleges. So you'd have to make a choice of one and apply.

if you really do love film then i would suggest going ahead and trying for tisch. since youll be a transfer student, it would probably be even more difficult to wait a year and transfer over to tisch if you originally were accepted to cas b/c then youd have missed two years of their program (and from what i hear, its very extensive). i say go for it!

are you majoring in film right now? that may help your chances.

cate,

you're at barnard right now? why do you want to transfer out?

I'd like to transfer for several reasons. The first is that Barnard is not helpful in terms of helping their students get internships, jobs, and volunteer work unless it invoves babysitting or teaching teenagers how to get ready for college. Their theatre department is almost non-existant (even thought they pretend it's great) and there isn't even a direct film major, there is only a film studies major. Morningside heights is horridly boring, the only things to do are go to bars and eat. The bars are dirty and filled with frat boys. It feels like I'm not even in the city. NYU seems like it has so many opportunities for it's students, and I love the fact that it's a big school in the heart of NYC. Plus, I'm not going to lie, the difficulties with living with a bunch of girls is enormous. I can go days without seeing a male, and this is depressing considering most of my friends at home were guys. (Not to stereotype but I think I enjoy a different sense of humor than most girls).

Why do you ask?

I'm really glad you said all this. I applied to Barnard and was wondering if I was crazy for wanting NYU more, but exactly what you said is the impression I got. :) I think that having internships contributes to an education more than regular classes (even if they are at columbia) and
I wouldn't want to be in NYC and not feel the magic.

I really hope you get your transfer to NYU, whether it be CAS or Tisch. :) I'm sure you'll get it.

thank you cate.
