To Appeal or Not??

Ok, so my son applied to Pitt's main campus in November 2012 with SAT score of 1860 and 3.7 GPA at one of the top ten public schools in the country. He included an essay and had three letters of recommendation that hadn't been received yet. In December, he got a letter stating that they needed more info and wanted his midterm grades. Well, we just sent his grades (all A's and one B) and his letters of recommendation were submitted as well and he was denied the main campus but offered Johnstown. My son has never wanted to go anywhere but Pitt and his father (who died tragically in a car accident when he was 14) went to both Pharmacy and Medical schools there. From the time he was 4 years old he went to all of the football games with his dad and has grown up thinking he would go to Pitt. My question is, should I write a letter on his behalf for reconsideration? One other important fact, we are out of state! Thanks in advance for any advice you could offer.

Your letter will do no good. The best thing he can do is start at the Johnstown campus and transfer to the main campus. His degree will read UPitt.

It couldn’t hurt to provide additional information to Pitt and ask that his application to the main campus be reconsidered. However the request for reconsideration and the submission of additional information needs to come directly from your son. Also your son should discuss the situation with your high school’s guidance counselor. Ideally the guidance counselor would be supportive of the request and be willing to contact Pitt admissions.

Yes, the guidance counselor should be willing to call admissions and at least find out if there was a specific reason and if they might reconsider. It is part of his or her job.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
