to be (recruited) or not to be?

Hello to you all,

I am thinking about applying to Harvard this fall and also about getting recruited by the swimming team. I definitely have the times to do so, but I am afraid I can't handle both the workload and training if I should get accepted.
Now my question is whether Harvard can rescind my admission or make me leave if I should choose to leave the team?
I know that technically you don't have any obligation, besides the honour code, to compete/practice on the team (no sports scholarships at Ivies..) but what will happen in reality if s.o. chooses to leave?
Will the coach take steps with admissions and try to find a reason to force you out or does the admissions office not care about these cases at all?

I definitely don't want to take the spot of another potential recruit and leave the team so does anyone know about cases where athletes left the team before matriculation/after a couple of years on the team and what happened to them?

I have also thought about getting on the team as a walk-on but the coach has urged me several times when he was visiting our school to get recruited for obvious reasons...

So what do you reckon should I do? I neither want to dissapoint the coach/lower my chances of getting in nor do I want to matriculate and wake up after a semester when I fail my first classes.

Thanks!

If swimming is your hook, you should use it. As long as you enter Harvard with the intention of committing yourself to being a member of the swim team, you need not feel any guilt.

If you get there, and you hate it, you can quit, and no one will think you're being deceitful. If you're willing to give it a chance, then you should allow yourself to be recruited.

And, likely, if the coach knows about you, then when you apply, he's going to put in a good word for you anyway, with the hopes that you'll swim when you get there.

Good luck!

Nothing.

That's why the football team recruits 120 players for a roster of 90, including walkons!

Thanks for your answers!

What are your times?
