To BFA or Not to BFA?

I’m thinking of auditioning to multiple schools for a transfer from a two-year college to a four-year university. However, I actually have an interest in another field of art - Game Design/Animation. I was just wondering if there were any BFA programs of Acting that would let you minor one of those while dealing with the BFA?

USC and CalArts come to mind. However, both majors are intensive training (my son is in one and his roommate in the other), and I don’t think there are very many BFA programs which allow the time to minor in something else. This is the reason some people choose a BA in Acting, which allows time for a minor. It’s a good idea to check directly with the program…their admissions people are always happy to answer any questions you may have. Anything can be accomplished with enough time and/or money.

Are you thinking of trying to do 2 BFAs at the same time? I am not an expert- but I have never seen/heard of that working out

Well, I wanted to do a BFA in Drama and then a minor in Game Design (my focus was a bit towards NYU but I was looking to other universities with those specific programs.) Two BFAs at the same time would definitely be a challenge, so I wasn’t looking for a double major with two BFAs. I was also wondering if, when I transfer, I would really have to do 4 yrs of uni when I had already did over 60+ credits at a two-year college.

I’ll look into USC and CalArts, but I’m more of an East Coast girl. ^w^

You will need to ask about residency requirements for the BFA. Many schools do require 3-4 years residency, at least thats what we saw when my D was auditioning a couple years ago. Her school only requires 2 years in the BFA program so they do exist out there. I’m not recommending her school because I don’t think they have a game design minor (or major).

You would have a lot more flexibility for minors if you go for a BA rather than BFA, but there are BFA programs that allow you to do that.

At DePaul, you can definitely pursue a BFA in Acting or Theatre Arts and a minor in Game Design.
