I was a spring admit and I am matriculating this January. Can I, should I bring a car? The only reason I ask is because I need to surf and I don't know how else to get to the beach. Does anyone know?

If you bring a car, good luck getting a parking permit (if there are any left).

Other than that negative, I certainly wish I had a car here. The campus has gotten boring by now and I'm fortunate that one of my friends has a car; we've been able to visit Santa Monica, go to the Grove several times, etc. If you bring a car and can find a place to park it, then you will make many friends quickly, trust me ;)

You are right. There are no permits left. Is there any way to get to a beach to surf?

TRUST me when I say this (this is coming from a senior).... bring a car!!! LA is far too big of a city to not have a car.

yes, bring a car. youll regret not having it. next yr, i suggest you look for an apt that has a reserved parking spot.

Are the off campus parking structures quite far from the main campus?

The parking center isn't that far, it's on the other side of the 110 freeway. But it is certainly not a safe walk by all means. There is a daily shuttle (24 hrs I think) which runs at certain time intervals, so one has to wait for the shuttle, let it make its entire round around the USC campus before heading out to the structure.

Are there securities patrolling in off campus structures?

Yes, there is security at the main parking center. There is also campus cruiser that can take you there in those wee hours.

There is security 24/7. Do yourself a favor a bring a car if you can. LA is a wonderful that is meant to be explored....but public transportation stinks and the area isn't wonderful late at night. I wouldn't want my child to walk from a bus stop to a dorm/apartment/or whatever

Is there a site where we can check what kind of permits (if any) are still available?

Go to the transportation website (http://transnet.usc.edu/) and you can click on permits.

I was so very glad when I had my car there. Later when I lived in off campus housing, parking was easier. I was close enough to walk to campus. The shuttle ran close to my street, but I was scared to death walking at night!
I was able to go the beach and church with my car.

I brought a car mainly for the reason that I live in San Diego and am about 2 hours away, so I occasionally go home on the weekends. Anyway, having a car is a good thing because you're pretty much never bored when you have nothing to do with your free time.
