I will be a freshman at Cal this fall, with a prospective major in political science. During my high school career, I took 5 AP exams: AP European History, AP US History, AP English Language and Composition, AP US Government, and AP Music Theory.

I got 5s on all of them except for Music Theory, which I received a 4 on.

Now I am planning to repeat Political Science 1, so my AP credits will not do any good there. But I just wanted to clarify if I have figured this out correctly:

AP English Language and Comp satisfies the first semester of the R&C requirement, giving me 5.3 units prior to my enrollment.

AP US History satisfies my American History and Institutions Requirement, and also gives me 5.3 credits.

AP European History gives me 5.3 credits since I will not repeat the course.

AP Music Theory gives me 5.3 credits since I will not repeat such a course.

So does this mean that prior to my enrollment I will have 21.2 units already with me? And that these units will be deducted from the 120 I need to graduate?

So could I essentially just sign up for the minimum required 13 credits for the eight semesters I plan to stay at Cal (unless logistical issues arise), and that would be fine?

basically, yeah. I’m an incoming freshman too with not as many AP credits and am still only signing up for 13 units. however, i remember reading somewhere that AP credits can’t count towards your major. But don’t quote me on that. Anyways yeah it sounds like youre coming in with that many raw credits but you may end up taking 120 creds on top of that for two reasons:
you may need that many to apply to your major, and
classes at cal are really hard, as they emphasized over and over at my calso…so even kids who get 5s on AP calc ab are advised to retake 16a. it’s fast paced, and besides, you’ll make more friends by taking classes.
Good luck!

The only class that I am planning to retake is Poli Sci 1, so I think my other AP Credits will minimize the max number I need. And for Poli Sci, I need to take three lower div classes, and 8 upper div classes(which seem to be all 4 units), with 6 units of upper division classes from another department, so overall I think I am good to take ONLY 13 units for every semester at Cal.

And actually I was thinking about taking History 7A to satisfy my history prerequisite for Poli Sci, and count for my American Cultures requirement. However, would this class nullify my AP US credits? Because my AP US test waived me completely out of the American History and Institutions requirement, but history 7A would otherwise count for the history part of the AH&I requirement (and the AC).

And I took a Calculus class at my local community college in high school which was worth 5 units there. Would these 5 units also be added to my college transcript?

I will have to check this out for engineering. My son took 13 AP classes and did well on all of them. I wonder how many units he has right now??

^^^ I mean to clarify, I know he will get help with his second semester Telebears time, but we’ve never actually sat down and figured out how many units he will have. It would be nice if he could take fewer units being that he is in engineering…

To put things in perspective, I went into Cal with 8 APs done and a college calculus course completed, and when I graduated 4 years later, I had completed over 160 units total (120 are needed to graduate).

In other words, it is highly unlikely that a student entering Cal with a good amount of APs done will need to worry about adjusting semester schedules to get out of Berkeley.
