saw 1 apartment at mid-wilshere, really fancy it, just wondering if its ok for a SMC student.

willing to travel to school within an hour.

Some other suggestions include: Santa Monica, Culver city and west LA

Yep. As to whether or not you’ll make it to campus within an hour, it depends on traffic. It’s faster if you drive, but finding parking is a hassle. The Rapid 7 Big Blue Bus stops on Western and Wilshire and will drop you off right in front of school, but it takes a little longer to get there than by driving. You save money by taking the bus because you can ride the big blue bus for free (if you’re in AS). The buses can get really crowded, though. If there’s not a lot of traffic, you can get there in 40 minutes by bus. If there’s a lot of traffic, it can take from about an hour to an hour and a half.

A lot of traffic on the 10. Trust me, going to school an having to commute from Korea Town to SMC is already pretty bad. It’s going to be even worse when there’s traffic. Try to live as close to school as possible. Culver city or Santa Monica should be fine.

Are you currently a SMC student or are you just planing to enroll there? Because LACC is pretty close and would be a much more manageable commute. Even if you’re a current SMC student it’s possible to still take classes at LACC. It may reduce your commute to every other day, which could save you on gas / wasted time in traffic.

+1 for living as close to campus as possible.

Traffic has been a nightmare because of construction on the 405, especially west to east at the end of the day. Could take 1.5 hours+ to get back to mid-Wilshire after classes by car, much longer by bus. Go for SM, West LA, Venice, Mar Vista or Brentwood. Even Culver City is not ideal.

I’ve been doing exactly that. Get on that Rapid 7 from Wilshire/Western and get dropped off right in front of school. It takes 40 minutes to an hour and I was cool with that. Driving on the 10 and finding parking is a hassle so if you’re willing to take the bus there should really be no problem. If you can afford a place near SMC, then go ahead, but if Koreatown is more affordable, it should be fine.

Koreatown is pretty far from SMC if you’re driving in traffic. I would try to find something a little closer.

Or go to LACC like dilapidatedmind said.

@tyjingyi,

Personally, I commuted from Culver City to SMC and it really wasn’t bad. The 10 freeway was about a minute from my apartment and it took a total of about ~12-15 mins to get to SMC (now parking is another story…). Yes, traffic on the 10 is horrendous at times, but in the morning, although it seemed very crowded, it keeps moving. After you pass the 405 exit on the 10 then things usually freed up until you get to the Cloverfield exit. I would recommend a morning schedule as the traffic becomes stop-and-go after about 2 or so coming back to Culver City.

Your other 2 suggestions are more favorable, of course with Santa Monica and all.

I live in downtown LA and commute to smc from MON-FRI and its doable if you are willing to wake up early! You can take Venice and get on the freeway on Robertson if traffic is too bad on the 10.

I live in mid wilshire, the traffic on the 10w is almost always awful. Its doable, I actually commute to el camino which is in Torrance but you would probably be a lot happier if you moved closer to SMC.

I live in Ktown and go to SMC. If you have class before 10AM or so, do not take the 10 freeway, take Pico westbound. It’ll take about 35-45 minutes to get to SMC.

The 10 West clears up at around 10 AMish so feel free to take that after 10 AM. It takes me exactly 20 minutes to get to school from my house taking the 10W at around 11 AM or so. The 10 East clears up a little bit before but it starts slowing down by 1 to 2 PM. It takes me 45 minutes max to get home taking the 10 east at 3 PM and 5:30 PM. Drive isn’t that bad, just get some good music.

I park at the Bundy campus and take the Sunset BBB to the main campus. I’ve never had difficulty finding parking at the Bundy campus with the exception of the first few weeks. If you can’t find parking at the Bundy campus, drive down the Airport road a little bit and there’s plenty of overflow parking there. There’s a little shuttle that runs between the overflow Airport Arts parking to the Bundy campus. It’s a 10 minute walk at worst if you decide to walk.

If you’re willing to leave home a bit earlier to park at the Bundy campus and take the BBB to the main, parking really isn’t a big problem at all.

Sorry just to kind of add to the question… Is living in Santa Monica/Venice be feasible to live in and go to UCLA?

lol i saw posts of housing at santa monica which states UCLA is nearby, so should be very alright.

ah so many choices but i’m not even there yet! lol!

Im gonna be a freshman at SMC.

was corresponding with a landowner at Ladera, maybe I will consider there too. Even he advised me to get a car if I were to live there. Well I probably should find a rent only when i’m there. I believe that its who I live with and not where I live that is important. Your core community is important for your most basic sanity(where you get rest or support).
