I have some FAQ’s that aren’t explicitly said in admission page/on Davis’s webpage and I was wondering if you guys can help me out
-
What is the deadline to submit housing requests/roommate requests-and how are you guys finding a roommate if you are considering we probably don’t know someone else in our school attending Davis?
-
Are you guys lugging a mini fridge/T.V etc. via plane or are you guys planning on buying it at the nearby stores?
-
Is it worth it to attend decision day on the 8th?
-
Have many of you won scholarships from UC-Davis directly or for us out of staters is most of payment coming in through loans/out of pocket and private scholarships?
-
Kind of taking a big plunge into going so far away (Illinois) anyone interested in exchanging phone numbers for possible roommate/freshman orientation day meetup?
I can help with some of the questions. UCD parent here:
- Housing request deadline:
Incoming freshmen who are admitted for fall quarter will receive a housing contract offer after submitting their Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). Immediately after submitting their SIR, students may begin the online housing application process. An email invitation will also be sent to students following their SIR. Application instructions are summarized below. The deadline to complete the housing contract is included within the application and the email invitation, and is usually within 1-2 days of the SIR deadline. The freshmen application process typically is open from mid-March through April.
For Roommates you can try: ■■■■■■■■
You could also request a student(s) you meet during Freshman Orientation since the deadline for roommate requests is the end of July.
My son met one of his Freshman roommates during orientation.

You can rent a mini fridge: http://fridgerental.ucdavis.edu
In regards to TV’s, most students will stream TV programs using their desktop or lap top computers. The residence hall lounges have TV’s.

If you have not made up your mind with certainty, then attending Decision day could help sway you to attend UCD.
There are many major specific activities/receptions available, dorm tours etc… If you have already visited, it probably would not be worth your while to fly out.

UC’s give little to no scholarships (merit aid). Most of the aid received is need-based for in-state applicants. There are some scholarships available for the top admitted OOS students which should be already posted in your FA package if you were eligible. As an OOS student, expect to be pretty much full pay.

I’m not a student but my daughter graduated from Davis last year.
1.) submit your housing deposit as soon as possible. You will be assigned a dorm and a room with a roommate. Generally, you don’t know your roommate before attending.
2.) Why in the world would you haul a fridge half-way across the country??? It’s heavy and costs more to ship than the price. Preorder your fridge, from one of the stores in town -Ace or Target, or order online. Your dorms are not that big, so you wont have a lot of room. If you are in a triple, each person brings one item (fridge/tv/fans). Sacramento is 20 minutes east on I-80 (Ikea, Container Store, REI). Woodland is 15 minutes north of Davis and has a Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s. If your parents are dropping you off, have them get everything.
3.) If you are flying in for Decision Day, you and your parents can see the “lay of the land”. It’s a very busy day and you will probably have to stay in Sacramento because most rooms are already booked. It’s mostly just to see where you will be living.
4.) Davis is a UC, which is a California public school. Since you are an OOS student, your parents have not paid California taxes, so you are not eligible for any financial aid (scholarships) from neither Davis nor the state. Most OOS cannot get loans on their own. The only student loan options are from the feds if you used the FAFSA app and even then, the amount is only $5500 for freshman year. That won’t cover your $55K per year fees, not including the health fees.
5.) Go on wikidavis and read up on Davis. Wait until you get your housing packet.
My D is pretty much set on UCD, she is just waiting to attend Decision day to make her final determination since that will be her first visit to the school. I have a hard time letting her commit fully until she sees the school in person. At that time she will submit her housing request. She may go with a random roommate unless she connects with someone that would be a good match on the meet up luncheon or Decision day. She is hoping to connect with someone that meets certain criteria that is important to her as far as lifestyle goes.
She will either buy a mini fridge near school or rent one through the college.
I think it is worth going to Decision day. My daughter’s major has scheduled a session to see the dept. meet others in her major as well as professors and dept head. As an oos student I like the idea that she will know where to go and be familiar with where her classes will be.
My daughter is on the group chat through the UC Davis 2012 facebook group. She has been talking to variety of students from all over there. Are you a guy or a girl?
That will be really hard to do. Most people go with their parents on decision day. You will be very busy with the programs they have scheduled for you.
The day starts with an assembly program in the ARC, then you will be busy with your campus tours, then dorm tours dining commons tours and department tours.
