To stay or transfer

(posted in another section too)
Hello all,

Most of you know what I'm going through. but here's a quick recap.

Started my current school after high school in 2008 and had hell adjusting to it. nothing went right at all. Had very few friends that turned out to not be good, had roommate issues, my school's housing department wasnt helpful at all since I wanted to move, didnt do well in alot of my classes and had to drop alot, been in trouble with the school for plagiarism twice (please dont judge harshly on this, as the situation is more complicated than this), was on disciplinary probation, separated last spring while having a nervous break down, took the rest of the year off and went to community college, did well there and felt great since I was near home and not 100% miserable like at my current school, now back and things are going better but Im still considering transferring as I still hate it here. I just lost the one thing that would make me stay here which was my best friend but we're no longer friends (another topic) and now I just feel like I have no reason to stay. I talked with my counselor and we agreed that I should consider this decision during a period of strength (academically) which would be now.

Right now I go to Case Western and Im considering transferring to OSU. I have a 2.8 right now which will be up to about 3. something after this semester. Right now I am a Polymer Science and Engineering major but havent started on it. havent started on any major so I guess you could say I wasted 3 years but I dont see it that way. This semester im finishing up the pre reqs and some core classes for engineering and Im sure the credits would transfer over.

I started out as Chem E and due to not getting any support from my department and talking to people in a different department, I switched to Polymers where they're guaranteeing me a research project and lots of support. I enjoy it alot. But it is not really enough to make me want to stay in Cleveland or Case; however, in my mind I think I would be making a big mistake by leaving and not graduating from this school even though I would think that OSU would be more widely know for engineering (not sure just my thought)

as of right now, im in the process of talking to some of the people in the Chem E department at OSU and the other engineering departments to see what they are all about and get more information as far as transferring and credits.

So basically, what I am asking is your guy's thoughts as to what I should do or consider doing. Thanks

What’s your academic standing? Is next year your last year, or do you have two more because of what happened? I couldn’t really tell from what your post said, given what you said about requirements and wasted years.

If you would have two years of undergrad left and are sure you would do better at OSU, then I would say that it’s a good option.

If not on one or both of those counts, give some more consideration to bettering your situation at Case Western and sticking it out.

Yeah sorry. guess I shouldnt have left that out on accident.

Technically, at case Im still a sophomore but will be 1 credit shy of being a junior after this semester.

at Case, to graduate in 2 years I would have to do a really rigorous schedule, other wise I could graduate in 3 years.

For OSU I would basically have to do 3 years since they have an application for their engineering program and I have to be accepted.

Can you afford the extra year at OSU?

How sure are you that you will be happier there?

I probably could since Id be able to get a job and my parents would help support me. It would be a bit easier on my family financially as well (who’s thinks me to stay at Case). Im not sure how happy I would be at OSU but I do know that it couldnt be worse than at Case. Id actually have some of my close friends who basically in the same situation (sort of) and I’d be closer to home which is always a plus for me.

Where does your family live, Cleveland or Columbus? You’d probably be better off near your family, it’s less stressful. And OSU is loads cheaper.

All in Columbus.

My parents say stay at Case for the better opportunity but im just wondering is it really that much better? a degree from OSU vs. a degree from Case

I would say avoid going to OSU right now as a transfer, we are in the process of switching over from quarters to semesters which may screw myself and others over as far as our projected graduation.

I heard about that and thought about that. Im wondering how that is going to work.

one other con I thought of is that I might have to retake Freshmen Chem due to Case not requiring engineers to take the chem lab

bump (10 char)

Although, the sooner you transfer to OSU (still in quarters) the sooner they can help you. If you were at OSU right now, you could be working with advisors to lay out a map of the future. Honestly, OSU engineering is ranked higher than Case. And it’s cheaper. But I can’t make your choice for you, I don’t know what would be best.
