To Those of you Accepted to Better Schools...

Please, don't accept to Johns Hopkins so I have a chance of getting off the wait list :)

^ I concur :)

In all seriousness, I know schools have NO idea if they need the waitlist until May, but as a waitlisted student I cannot help but pray that they do. Best of luck to all!

Can any past waitlisted but now admitted students comment as to extra items they submitted to help their chances? Any general advice regarding the waitlist? Thanks.

LOL that’s funny!
that’s a great college so don’t say “to those of you accepted to BETTER schools”

good luck. I hope you get in, I already committed to UCSB (i know not the best UC but certainly my first choice)

Luckily for you all… finaid is lookin pretty wack. Anyone ever heard of an appeal yielding a 15k bump? …

:( didn’t think so…

No such thing as a “better” school, just different or more selective. JHU is really as great as they come for undergraduate studies. Just saying.

I don’t think the OP meant “better” as in ranked higher or superior, just a school that those accepted to JHU deem a better fit for them than JHU… and michaelwiggins as much as I want to get off the waitlist I’m sorry JHU isn’t giving you adequate financial aid.

Anyway, any general advice regarding the waitlist is appreciated. Thanks!

I’m enrolling at JHU, but if Georgetown accepts me from their waiting list, maybe you could have my spot. :p

Hello, it is I, a mythical waitlist admittee! I was one of ~40 admitted off of a 1,000 person waitlist in 2007. I have said the same thing every year on this website and I will say it again.
This is what I did:
-I wrote an EMAIL to the dean of admissions for my area updating her on activities. In my case, they were 1. leading my team, as captian, to the state debate championship 2. winning a schoolwide scholarship for outstanding work in the social studies 3. Doing an independent study on Irish history (whew, can’t believe I remember all of that 4 years later). I also said I would attend if admitted.
I did nothing else. Repeat, I did nothing else.

Now, from what I know due to conversations after the fact, I have learned the following: The people on the waitlist are not ranked, but I believe the JHU AdCom has a pretty good idea of the handful of people it would like to admit (I was admited May 10th or so, they couldn’t have gone thru the ENTIRE waitlist between May 1 and May 10th). I know JHU had been looking at my application for a long time (I was from an area/school they were trying to attract) and were looking for some indication that I would attend if admitted. Once I gave that indication, I was good to go.

Now, my recommendations for you: 1. Write an email 2. FORGET about JHU. Buy yourself a sweatshirt for your school that you’re attending, even if you don’t want to go. I literally wore my GW sweatshirt everywhere, and every night before bed, I would chant “I love GW I love GW I love GW” a zillion times, and guess what? By the end of April I really started to love GW! The odds are not in your favor. They were not in my favor. Be pleasantly surprised (or shocked, I ran screaming through the halls of my high school when I got the phone call) if you get off the waitlist. But get prepared for what will undoubtedly be an amazing four years somewhere else.

Honestly, don’t get your hopes up on the JHU waitlist. The yield has been increasing every year and once Hopkins reaches its target class of about 1250 (which they easily will this year), they won’t accept anyone off the waitlist. Start loving the schools you’ve been accepted to.

I’m going to revisit everywhere, but I bet I’ll like WashU in St. Louis better than JHU. If so, you can have my spot!

Thanks for all the input guys!

And yes, but better I meant schools that are a better fit for specific people.

How big is the wait list this year?

Yes thanks so much for the input! My next two top offers are WUSTL and UMich, but I did have my heart set on JHU for awhile. MasterMargarita, were you notified via e-mail or in the mail first of your admittance off the waitlist?

UCSB is a real up and comer. I’d graduated from there back in 1975. If you haven’t seen the campus, you are in for a treat. You can get as much from any school as you put into it. It’s more about the student than the institution, the resources are there. I say that as someone who subsequently did his grad. work at Harvard.

At UCSB you’ll have life quite literally on the beach (of course you still have to work hard) vs. inner city Baltimore; sun and 75 degrees most every day w/an ocean breeze vs. soot and snow; great food, at least when I was there, and Santa Barbara 10 miles away. Shorts and T-Shirts are the dress of the day. I remember scheduling lots of early morning classes, and a couple in the evening, able to leave wide open the time from lunch(by the lagoon) until dinner. The University is making great strides as a research institution.

I was notified via personal phone call from an admissions dean.
