To those that applied to both USC and UC

So I just got done talking with the counselor and it seems like UC and USC both have different pre-reqs. So in theory, in order for me to apply both schools I would have to have over 60 credit hours since they require different pre-reqs.

So to those that applied to both schools, was that the case pretty much? Or since USC accepts applicants without finishing pre-reqs, did you prioritize UC's pre-reqs?

I completed igetc and all the prereqs for UCs and didn’t look at what was required for USC. I got into USC Marshall, UCLA, UCSD, and Cal. I think if you complete igetc it covers most of the GE requirements. What major are you applying to?

Well my main goal was getting into Marshall and apply to UC as a backup(Eastern Asian Studies which doesn’t really require any major pre-req) but I guess that won’t be a viable option for me anymore.

I asked this question in one of the other threads as well, but since the use of the word ‘pre reqs’ comes up here too, I thought I would ask you guys for your input:

By ‘pre reqs’, are you all referring to just the major prep/prerequisite classes that I need for my major? For instance, I’m a Japanese major, so my ‘pre reqs’ for the UC would just be considered the elementary/intermediate Japanese courses as well as a Japanese civilization class that I’ve already taken at my community college. (Per UCLA’s Course Catalog)

Or, when you say ‘pre reqs’, are you talking about ALL the GE courses (like English, Math, Science, etc.) that I need to take at the community college level in order to transfer?

Sorry about the confusion, I’m referring to the GE’s that each schools require. For example, USC will accept Geo 1 & 6 but UC only accepts Geo 2 & 7.

Oh, no problem, molamann! I think at the other thread where I asked this question, they were referring to the major prep courses, so I just got a bit confused.

In regards to your question, I am also applying to both UC and USC, but for me, a lot of the GE’s are the same. Generally, USC requires less than UC. For instance, for UC, you would need both physical and biological science, but USC only requires one.

I think it depends on what the articulation agreements are with your CC. I go to SMC and I was able to take History 2, Anthropolog 2, Botany 1, Music 32, English 2, and Communication 10… these classes cover all of the GE’s at USC and also many of the IGETC requirements. I will complete 61 units by Spring '10 and fulfill all of the GE’s for USC and IGETC and pre-reqs for my major.

I’ve done all the prereqs for my major. I’m upset at USC, though. I completed my major prereqs (all language courses) BEFORE graduating high school. Nonetheless, they were taken at the same community college I go to now and appear on my college transcript, as they were regular college courses. Now, USC tells me that they can’t accept those classes as transferable because they were taken before I graduated high school. How odd! It shouldn’t make a difference – as long as the courses were taken at the college level and appear on the final transcript, it should be fine. What makes me the most mad is that those language classes are for my major (Japanese)!

I’m certainly glad that UCLA doesn’t have such a policy, LOL!

I too did what Jetforce did and got into all the UCs I applied to and USC Marshall. It just so happened that the GEs I used to fulfill my IGETC could also be used for USC.

Generally speaking the IGETC covers most(if not all) of USC general ed requirements. USC has less general ed requirements than does the UCs. It’s a matter of planning out your IGETC courses, so that they also cover USC’s general ed requirements wherever they can.

I did 69 units at Community college, and it covered usc and igetc requirements and got into both ucs and usc. just look at the articulation agreements between usc and your community college, and check off the ones that also count for igetc ie anthropology, sociology etc.

It does. I applied to all the UCs and USC. I did exactly 60 units following the IGETC format. Just discuss with your counselor as to what classes you should prioritize on. Basically what I did was use the IGETC + Assist.org (for pre-req majors) + USC req. to cross out one by one.

Btw, USC seems to have a much more personal/lenient policy in regards to accepting transfers. While I did use it as my backup, I managed to get into USC as a History major. One frustrating thing I had to deal with was the lack of a straightforward guide like the UCs. My counselor even joked when I questioned about USC. “They do their own thing. Don’t worry about it. Just choose w/e you want to do and go for it.” And interestingly enough, that worked.

*Just a side-question for those who accepted USC’s offer… did you ever have to cite changes to final transcripts? I remember I had to do it for UCLA’s, but I don’t recall seeing one for USC. Maybe it’s because they don’t have a 60 unit requirement? Either ways it’s too late, but I’d like to know.

so im guessin everyone who was accepted to usc completed the 3 semester language requirement?

i don’t think they care about you completing general education requirements for the process of admission. I only completed the English requirement and didn’t do the 5 or so other GE requirements. I also did not do the foreign language requirement. I even only took 3 units during my last semester instead of using my time to fulfill some of those requirements (since I completed all my requirements for IGETC and UC and didn’t really want to go to USC that much) What else? my essay is complete garbage and I STILL GOT IN.

However, it’s probably a good idea to complete as many lower division requirements for your major as possible, which is what I actually did do. Look up the department website for your major and look for course-to-course equivalencies with this website: Error.

keep your gpa high and good luck.

and btw i got in for econ.

I didn’t finish the usc foreign language requirement. I just did 2 french courses. you can finish the language requirement once there, especially if you can place into the 3rd semester courses or higher.

Arrr, I’m so willing to pay a counselor and map out my courses. Even the 30 minute sit down counseling at El Camino didn’t help all that much.

I applied to both and ended up choosing USC. I got in at Berkeley, but didn’t apply to UCLA because of your predicament – I didn’t have enough time to keep my job and do pre-reqs for both UCLA and USC.

You don’t need a counselor to hold your hand and map out the USC required classes from the above-posted articulation, and from the IGETC. All of my USC-transferable classes overlapped with IGETC, and I’m sure that yours will too since you’re coming from a CCC. Just be tactful about what classes you take, and obviously keep the GPA as high as possible.
