What’s UWCSE?

The UW Computer Science and Engineering department.

For mlidge and my year (hs class of 2010), they took about 30-32 direct admits (including ACAD students) out of 1000 freshman applicants that said they wanted to major in CS or CE on their application. They always take about 30 direct admits per incoming year, but the numbers of freshman applicants interested in CSE have been climbing.

I have a friend who is in that major. He’s a genius man. He’s also in the Honors College.

Lol, engineering at UW is intense.

I want to just point out that Honors College isn’t ‘intense,’ it’s just a select number of people who show that they can think in an interdisciplinary matter and show that to Honors admissions. There are GPA requirements (3.3 min), but other than that… I find that Honors classes are GPA buffers, to say the least. (I’m in Honors, and I’m in no way trying to play down the program, but this is from my experience and what I’ve learned from talking to the advisors a lot.

I wish I would have done it. It would look amazing on a CV.

What year are you (if you haven’t graduated already)?

3.91 uw gpa
1950 SAT
3rd in hs class
6 APs, all 4’s or 5’s on test
pretttyyy decent essays if i say so my self
exc:
leadership/asb
honor society officer
teen mentoring
environmental club
camp counselor
broadcast/media
yearbook
church/yg involvement

that got me accepted for fall of 2010. honestly though, it seems to me that uw puts more emphasis on essays and rigor of classes and extracurrics. i know someone who got accepted for the same year who had a 3.36 uw gpa and 1800 sat or something like that but veryyy solid extracurrics and an essay talking about how his parents immigrated to allow their kids to go to college in the us etc. so i wouldn’t worry too much :)

@Speedsolver:

It seems like you’re one of the few people who grasp UW’s policy on diversity. Goodness gracious.

According to the census I’m a “White Male of Hispanic Descent” and my essay was about the influence of religion in my life and our family’s cultural values. I’m only fluent in 2 languages but I’m conversant in 2 others and I was sure to mention that in my essay as well. But other than my central core of Religion and related culture, I only touched on the other subjects. I mean, the essay couldn’t be long enough to do much more.
