TOEFL - did you take it?

I know WashU suggests the TOEFL for any person whose 1st language is not English, but most other top universities only strongly recommend it if English is not the first language and if it hasn't been the primary language of instruction for the past so-and-so years.

The website says it's to the applicant's advantage to take it, but is it really that much of a bonus? Is it also perhaps a slight disadvantage to not have taken it?

English isn't my first language, but I've been in the US for all my years of schooling...

I do not think you have to take TOEFL. You have been here for many years, and you are nearly native already. If you send your TOEFL in, they may think you are not that confident about your English skills. If you do not send it in, they will think your "TOEFL" --->perfect score.
